BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Thanks to a dominant 4-0 victory in the 14th Army-Navy Cup, the Army West Point men's soccer program took home four of the Patriot League's Player of the Week honors, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
Jubril Bamgbala was named the Offensive Player of the Week, Jack Meyer was named Midfielder of the Week, Owen Ennis was named Defensive Player of the Week and Michael Guiry was named the Goalkeeper of the Week.
Bamgbala, a junior forward from North Providence, R.I., erupted in the 72nd minute of the Army-Navy Cup on Friday night, as he recorded two goals in the span of 53 seconds to help the Black Knights cruise to victory. In addition to his goals, Bamgbala had five total shots, including four on goal. The forward now leads Army in goals (4), points (8), shots (26) and shots on goal (11) this season.
A native of Southlake, Texas, Meyer has now won two Midfielder of the Week honors this season. He recorded a pair of assists against Navy, including one on the game-winning goal. Meyer perfectly set up Jack Kryger's opening goal in the 15th minute after firing a beautiful cross into the box that Kryger headed home. Meyer also assisted on the second goal of the game, heading a perfect pass to Riley Cullum who showed off some impressive skills to fire home Army's second goal of the game. Meyer leads Army in assists this season with four. He also added two shots – one on target – in the victory.
Ennis, a junior from North Kingstown, R.I., had arguably one of his best collegiate performances on Friday night, as he helped hold down the backline in the shutout victory. The Army defense allowed just one shot on goal all night, which came with 28 seconds left in the second half. Ennis also recorded an assist on Army's third goal of the game after his cross towards goal was headed home by Bamgbala. Ennis also had two shots on goal in the victory.
The final honor of the week went to Guiry, a sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla., who recorded his fifth shutout of the season. Guiry faced 10 shots on Friday but had to make just one save. He leads the team with 41 saves on the year, while giving up just 1.00 goal per game. He has stopped 82.0 percent of shots fired at him this season, which is 23rd in the country.
