Army Drops Road Contest to Oregon
November 16, 2025 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. – The Army West Point women's basketball team battled tough all afternoon but fell to Big Ten foe Oregon, 80-55, at Matthew Knight Arena on Sunday.
Army (3-1) suffered its first loss in the Katie Kuester era but took plenty of positives away from the battle against one of the most athletic teams in college basketball. Kya Smith led the charge with a game-high 20-point, seven-rebound performance. She now has two 20-point performances on the season and four in her career.
The game also served as homecoming for senior guard Reese Ericson, who is a native of Lake Oswego, Ore., which is just over 90 minutes north of Eugene. Ericson had six points and a team-best eight assists.
Oregon (4-0) came out of the gates strong and led for over 39 minutes on Sunday. The Black Knights struggled shooting the ball early and found themselves down 14-2 eight minutes into action. Army was able to close the opening quarter on a 4-0 run to make it an eight-point deficit after one.
Army was much crisper offensively in the second quarter, going 8-14 form the field and scoring 19 points. The Black Knights got five points apiece from Taylor Wilson and Smith in the second quarter, while Camryn Tade added four. While still down by 10 at the half, Army was carrying a lot of momentum going into the locker room.
The Ducks opened the second half strong and increased its lead to 48-28 going into the under-five minute media timeout. On the ropes, Army responded well and went on a 14-6 run to close the quarter and make it just a 12-point disadvantage going into the final frame of play.
Fatigue seemed to kick in late for Army, who continued battling, but was outscored 26-13 in the final quarter to bring the score to 80-55.
Oregon had five players score in double-digits, including a team-high 17 points from Mia Jacobs. Katie Fiso had a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists.
The Numbers
Oregon led in points off turnovers (30-9), points in the paint (42-28), fast break points (7-3) and bench points (21-11). The Black Knights continued to dish out assists, recording 16 on Sunday, but it turned it over a season-high 24 times.
The Ducks won the rebounding battle 31-23.
Army finished the night shooting 44.2 percent from the field, 29.2 percent from distance and 40.0 from the charity stripe. Oregon sat at 56.1 percent shooting, including 11-11 from the line.
Quotable – Head Coach Katie Kuester
"I think we really displayed our heart and our grit in moments. We never gave in, that's for sure. I don't think that the score is indicative of the outcome we had… At the halfway mark, we were exactly where we needed to be, but they hit big shots in big moments. It was tough to respond."
