February 22, 2025 | Women's Basketball
WEST POINT, N.Y.- The Army West Point Women's Basketball team (20-5, 12-3 PL) defeated Bucknell (14-2, 9-6 PL), earning their 20th win of the season on senior day. This marks the first time the Black Knights have had a 20-win season since the 2016-17 season.
Leading the way was freshman Sam Tillson, who had a career-high performance by knocking down 17 points on a 56% shooting percentage, including three of four three-point shots. Fiona Hastick followed with 13 points, while sole senior Trinity Hardy had a team-high seven assists, six rebounds, and four steals while contributing nine points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Bucknell came out firing, going on a quick 5-0 run in the first quarter. Army quickly equalized in less than a minute, ignited by a Tillson three-pointer and a Hastick layup. For the remainder of the quarter, the Bison and the Black Knights traded the lead, with no team holding an advantage of more than three points. Army led by one with just under two minutes to go, but Bucknell hit a layup with 45 seconds remaining to take the lead, 14-13, at the end of the quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, Bucknell and Army traded a pair of three-pointers, keeping the game tight in the opening minutes. Then, it became a defensive battle for the next two minutes, with neither team able to score until a shooting foul on Tillson allowed her to hit two free throws, giving Army an 18-17 lead. After a defensive stand, Tillson hit a jumper to further stretch the lead, but Bucknell quickly tied it back in the next possession with a free throw. For the remainder of the half, the Bison and the Black Knights traded points, with Army capitalizing by outscoring Bucknell 11-5 in the closing minutes to take a 31-25 lead at halftime.
The Black Knights came out of the locker room firing in the third quarter, immediately going on an 11-0 run in the first four minutes, which pushed their advantage to 42-25 over the Bison. Bucknell tried their best to respond by scoring four unanswered points, but Army's momentum continued to carry them. For the remainder of the quarter, Army and Bucknell traded points, with Army holding a slight edge by outscoring Bucknell 12-9; however, the 11-0 run at the start of the quarter was too much for Bucknell to overcome, so Army entered the fourth quarter with a 54-38 lead.
The Black Knights went on a 6-0 run to start the final quarter. Bucknell responded by scoring five points, but fouls plagued the Bison while Army continued to knock down their free throws. Although Bucknell made an effort to hang with the Black Knights by outscoring them 16-15 in the final quarter, Army's huge third-quarter lead proved insurmountable, and Army won 69-54.
