Duffy's Nine Goals Leads No. 19 Women's Lacrosse to Victory Over Colgate to Conclude Regular Season

WEST POINT, NY - No. 19 Army West Point women's lacrosse (13-2, 8-1 Patriot League) escaped with a 17-16 victory over Colgate (9-6, 5-4 Patriot League) from Michie Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Black Knights conclude the regular and Patriot League circuit with a 13-2 overall record and 8-1 mark in the conference, which marks the second team that the program has reached eight conference wins in a regular season.
The win also put Army at 7-0 at home on the season as the Black Knights have the number two seed in the Patriot League Tournament and will await an opponent for the semifinal round on Thursday, May 1 from Baltimore, Md.
Brigid Duffy matched a program record with nine goals while adding nine draw controls and four ground balls. Her ground ball total increased to 44 for the season, giving her the new single season program record.
Alyce Smith and Gabrielle Mirak also logged multi-goal efforts for the Black Knights while Sarah Chernik secured eight draw controls as Army won the draw 20-16.
The Black Knights jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first quarter as Lily Valentini, Ryan Remaly and Smith all scored within the first five minutes. The run was capped from a Geneva Milch Cesoni score followed by two tallies from Duffy.
The Raiders were given four green cards and three yellow cards in the opening frame which limited their offensive opportunities, as they were outshot 11-5 in the opening stanza. Ella Bishara scored in the final minute for Colgate to make it a 6-1 scoreline heading into the second quarter.
Colgate's offense came to life in the second quarter, scoring seven times while Army added three more before halftime to take a 9-8 lead into the break. Duffy was involved in all three goals, scoring twice while assisting Smith on another.
Army found its footing again in the second half, scoring the first three out of the break within the first five minutes. Mirak notched her first of the game before Duffy and Allison Reilly beat Lauren Solis in the Raiders' cage.
The Black Knights took a 14-11 advantage into the final quarter as Duffy then deposited the first goal of the final frame to Army ahead by four.
The Raiders refused to go away, netting the next two which made it a 15-13 Army lead with 8:34 to play. Mirak then scored the biggest goal of the game to push the Black Knights back ahead by three, a goal that was quickly answered with a woman-up score from the Raiders with exactly five minutes to play.
Duffy continued her historic effort, scoring her ninth of the game which proved the game-winner with 3:21 remaining. Colgate scored twice quickly after which made it a 17-16 game with a pivotal draw control looming at the 1:06 mark.
Mirak was able to best her opponent in the draw circle as the Black Knights gained the crucial possession with the shot clock turned off. With the Colgate net empty, Duffy was able to play keep away and hold possession until the clock hit zero to give the Black Knights the narrow victory.
The Black Knights went five-for-seven from the eight-meter in the victory while being a perfect ten-for-ten in the clear.
