April 05, 2025 | Men's Lacrosse
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The No. 6-ranked Army West Point men's lacrosse team hit the road to take on the RV Colgate Raiders on Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium. The Black Knights were firing on all cylinders as the offense opened up a four-goal lead in the first quarter and the defense held Colgate to two scoreless quarters in the contest.
Senior attacker Jackson Eicher led the Black Knights with five goals and two assists for seven points. Hill Plunkett followed closely with two goals and three assists for five points and a hat trick for Gunnar Fellows tied him for third in overall points for Army.
The Black Knights smothered the neutral zone, causing 10 turnovers from the Raiders and picking up 31 ground balls over 60 minutes of play. Ryan Nixon led the way for Army with six ground balls and three caused turnovers as one of Army's starting defenders.
Sean Byrne put up yet another impressive showing in goal for Army, tallying 13 saves with 37 total shots faced and only seven goals allowed. With the win, Byrne moves to a 9-1 record for the season with a 6.03 goals-against average and a .671 save percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Black Knights broke open the scoring early in Hamilton as senior attacker Jackson Eicher logged back-to-back goals in the second and third minutes of action to give Army an early cushion. Gunnar Fellows followed suit shortly after, firing a shot low on Colgate's Matt LaCombe to extend Army to a 3-0 lead just 39 seconds after Eicher's second goal.
Brayden Fountain jumped in on the fun to record Army's fourth goal of the quarter midway through the opening frame with a rocket to the top shelf to record his 30th goal of the season. The Black Knights demonstrated their defensive prowess early in the contest, holding the Raiders scoreless in the first quarter for the first time this season.
Colgate got on the board with a goal four minutes into the second quarter but Gunnar Fellows responded with his second goal of the day just over 30 seconds later to maintain Army's lead. Eicher extended Army's lead with a vicious low-high shot to earn his sixth hat trick of the season halfway through the quarter.
Long-stick midfielder Christian Fournier notched his first goal of the season and the second of his career as he unloaded from midfield and found the Raiders' net unprotected to push Army to a 7-1 lead. The Raiders continued to find their stride, but Fountain's second goal of the game helped Army secure an 8-5 lead at halftime.
Fountain's fellow Army freshman Hill Plunkett joined in on the fun early in the third quarter, notching his tenth and 11th goals of the season unassisted to push Army to a 10-5 lead before Gunnar Fellows gave Army a six-goal lead with his third goal of the game.
Eicher recorded his fourth goal of the game on a setup from Fountain with just under two minutes left in the third quarter to put the Black Knights ahead by seven and secure the second quarter of the game with no goals allowed for the Raiders.
The Warrenton, Va. native wasn't done yet, however and would go on to score his fifth goal of the game unassisted five and a half minutes into the quarter to mark Army's 13th goal of the game. Colgate cut into Army's lead with a pair of goals under the five-minute mark but the Black Knights held firm and claimed their ninth win of the season to shake off the similarities to the 2024 season.
