October 02, 2026 | Men's Rugby
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Army West Point men's rugby travels to State College on Saturday to take on Rugby East foe Penn State. The match is set to kickoff at 3:00 p.m.
Entering the contest, the Black Knights hold a 3-1 overall record and are searching for their first conference win after dropping their Rugby East opener last weekend. Penn State started the season 3-0 and has a 1-0 conference record.
"We're looking forward to getting back on the field and applying the lessons from our last performance while continuing to build on the many positives. Penn State will provide a formidable challenge as an undefeated team playing at home, but our focus remains firmly on ourselves, continuing to improve, raising our standard, and putting forward a better performance than the week before," said head coach Matt Sherman.
The Black Knights command a 9-7 record all-time over the Nittany Lions, winning their last seven matchups dating back to the 2018-19 season. In their previous meeting in November of last season, Army defeated Penn State 55-14 after scoring 35 unanswered points in the first half of play.
Last time out, Army fell 26-14 to service academy rival Navy in Annapolis. Howie Heller opened the scoring with his fifth try of the season in the first 10 minutes of action, before the Midshipmen converted three unanswered tries. The Black Knights battled to get back in the game after Luke Leech scored a try in the 64' to make the contest a one-score game, but a Navy possession and late try closed out the matchup.
Scoring for the Black Knights has been led by Nick Trout with 57 points and 26 conversions, followed by Heller with 25 points on five tries. Heller has scored at least one try in each of Army's first four contests.
Army returns home to the Anderson Rugby Complex next weekend on October 9 to continue their Rugby East conference slate against Mount St. Mary's (Md.) with kickoff scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
