March 14, 2026 | Softball
QUEENS, N.Y. — Army West Point softball (9-13) traveled to one of the Five Boroughs of New York City on Saturday for two games, splitting action with a 1-7 loss to the St. John's Red Storm (16-8), then grabbed a 5-1 win over the Harvard University Crimson (6-8-1).
When taking on the home team, St. John's, Army created several opportunities offensively and showed late fight at the plate, but a big middle-inning rally by St. John's proved decisive as the Black Knights fell, 7–1.
In the matchup against the Crimson, Army combined timely hitting with strong pitching from Amana Eaglin and defense to secure a 5–1 victory over Harvard. Amanda Eaglin pitched a complete game, plus Newburn led the charge offensively with multiple RBIs, while Tepley, Brown, and Coonfare each contributed key hits.
Caitlyn Newburn shined offensively on Saturday, earning three hits while batting .600, and adding a walk. Newburn earned a single, her first triple of the season, a home run, three RBIs and two runs.
Sienna Tepley was right behind Newburn with two hits and one run. Taylor Brown, Samantha Sims, Emma Murchison, Breanna Coonfare and Mia Bonsignore also added hits.
Amanda Eaglin led the way for the pitching unit, pitching a full 7.0 innings against Harvard, only allowing two hits, one earned run and one walk while adding four strikeouts, ultimately earning the win for the Black Knights.
Breanna Izzo started the matchup against the Red Storm, pitching 3.2 innings, with Katelyn Flanders pitching in relief for 2.1 innings, the two combining to allow seven runs and 13 hits against St. John's, with Breanna Izzo seeing the loss for the Black Knights.
GAME 1
Army threatened early in the top of the first inning. Ashton White worked a two-out walk and Caitlyn Newburn followed with another walk, putting two runners aboard. However, the Red Storm escaped the inning with a strikeout to keep the game scoreless.
In the bottom half, Army's defense backed its pitching staff well, stranding a runner at third after Breanna Izzo and the Black Knights recorded three consecutive groundouts to avoid early damage.
The Black Knights continued to work counts and create traffic on the bases in the early innings. Maisi Sigler drew a walk in the second, and Taylor Brown reached on a walk and later stole second in the third, but St. John's pitching prevented Army from finding a timely hit to break through.
The game shifted in the bottom of the third inning when St. John's strung together several hits to produce a four-run rally. Following multiple singles, a two-run double extended the Red Storm lead, then Katelyn Flanders entered as relief for Izzo. An additional RBI hit pushed the advantage to 4–0 before Army could end the inning.
St. John's added to its lead in the fourth with another offensive surge, this time against Flanders. Consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly produced three more runs, extending the Red Storm advantage to 7–0.
Army continued to compete offensively late in the game. In the sixth inning, Newburn provided the highlight for the Black Knights, launching a solo home run to cut the deficit to 7–1 and put Army on the scoreboard.
The Black Knights nearly mounted another rally in the seventh. Samantha Sims led off with a single and Emma Murchison followed with a double, giving Army runners on second and third with one out. However, St. John's pitching managed to escape the jam and prevent additional runs.
GAME 2
The Black Knights' starting pitcher, Amanda Eaglin, set the tone early, retiring Harvard in order in both the first and second innings. Army's defense backed the effort with clean play in the field, including three groundouts in the opening frame that quickly ended the Crimson's first opportunity.
Army broke through in the second inning. Maisi Sigler reached after being hit by a pitch, and Emma Murchison later reached on a fielding error, putting two runners on base. Mia Bonsignore delivered the game's first run with an RBI single, bringing Sigler home and giving the Black Knights a 1–0 lead.
Army added to its advantage in the third inning. Sienna Tepley sparked the scoring with a double, and two batters later, Caitlyn Newburn lined an RBI single to score Tepley and extend the lead to 2–0.
Harvard managed to push across a run in the fourth inning after a single and an error placed runners in scoring position. A groundout allowed the Crimson to bring home a run and cut the deficit to 2–1, but Army limited the damage and prevented further scoring.
The Black Knights broke the game open in the fifth inning with their most productive offensive frame. Taylor Brown doubled to place the first runner on, and Ashton White reached on an error that allowed Brown to score.
Moments later, Newburn delivered again with an RBI triple, driving in White. Breanna Coonfare followed with an RBI single, bringing Newburn home and stretching the Army lead to 5–1.
Army's pitching and defense took over from there. The Black Knights retired the Crimson in order in the sixth inning and worked out of a potential threat in the seventh, stranding two runners in scoring position to secure the 5–1 victory.
