Softball Splits Doubleheader in the Bronx Against Fordham
March 25, 2026 | Softball
BRONX, N.Y. — Army West Point softball (12-17) traveled south to the city on Wednesday afternoon and ended up splitting a doubleheader against the Fordham University Rams (11-16), first taking a 7-1 win before seeing a 1-2 loss.
To start the day, Army used an explosive power surge and strong all-around play to defeat Fordham 7–1, highlighted by a four-home run performance that broke the game open.
In game two, the Black fell in a tightly contested 2–1 battle against Fordham, with the game defined by strong pitching and limited offensive breakthroughs on both sides.
Sophomore Hannah Laub led the Black Knights offense through the day, finishing the day with three hits, two home runs and four RBIs while batting .500 on the day. Her two home runs in game one were the first of her career.
Caitlyn Newburn added two hits on the day, one of hers being a home run in game one. Emma Murchison added the fourth home run on the day for the Black Knights. Sienna Tepley, Ashton White, Taylor Brown and Makaila Moosbrugger also added one hit each throughout the day for Army.
Amanda Eaglin earned the start and win in game one, finishing the day with a zero ERA, only allowing two hits and three walks while adding three strikeouts, while pitching a complete game.
Katelyn Flanders was granted the start in game two, finishing the day, only allowing two runs, one being earned, over 6.0 innings. She earned seven strikeouts through the game while allowing six hits and three walks.
GAME 1
The Black Knights settled in after Fordham took an early 1–0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on an Army error and an RBI single. From that point forward, however, Amanda Eaglin took control, limiting Fordham's offense and keeping the game within reach while the lineup found its rhythm.
Army answered in the second inning with its first big swing. After two quick outs, Hannah Laub stepped in and launched a solo home run to left-center, tying the game at 1–1 and igniting the offense.
The game turned decisively in the fourth inning, when Army unleashed a dominant stretch fueled by power. Caitlyn Newburn led off the inning with a solo home run to left-center, giving the Black Knights their first lead.
On the very next batter, Emma Murchison followed with another solo home run to the same part of the field, going back-to-back and extending the lead to 3–1.
Army wasn't finished. After Breanna Coonfare worked a walk, Laub delivered again with her second home run of the game—a two-run shot to right-center. The swing capped a three-home-run inning, as Army surged ahead 5–1 and firmly took control of the game.
With momentum fully on their side, the Black Knights continued to apply pressure in the sixth inning. Newburn sparked the rally with a single, and Army executed situational hitting to add on. Laub contributed again with an RBI groundout, and Makaila Moosbrugger followed with an RBI single, pushing the lead to 7–1.
In the circle, Amanda Eaglin was outstanding after the opening frame. Following the unearned run in the first, the Black Knights held Fordham scoreless over the final six innings, retiring hitters efficiently and preventing any sustained offensive threats. The defense backed the effort with clean play and key outs to keep the Rams off the board.
Army's offense was led by its relentless power display, featuring two home runs from Laub, including a pivotal two-run blast, along with back-to-back home runs from Newburn and Murchison in the fourth inning. Laub finished with multiple RBIs were central to nearly every scoring rally.
GAME 2
Defensively, Army was sharp early behind Katelyn Flanders, who set the tone in the circle. After Fordham put two runners on in the first inning, Flanders helped strand them and keep the game scoreless.
Fordham broke through in the second to take a 1–0 lead, but Army responded in the third. Breanna Coonfare reached after being hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position, and the Black Knights capitalized when Sienna Tepley reached on a fielding error, allowing Coonfare to score and tie the game at 1–1.
Flanders continued to battle in the circle, working through traffic and adding to her strikeout total, including another swinging strikeout in the third inning to escape a jam with multiple runners on base.
However, Fordham regained the lead in the fourth, using a combination of an error, aggressive baserunning, and a sacrifice fly to go ahead 2–1.
From there, Flanders locked in. She held Fordham scoreless over the final three innings, adding more strikeouts and forcing weak contact to keep Army within one.
Offensively, Army had opportunities but couldn't deliver the tying run. Ashton White's single in the fourth and Hannah Laub's single in the seventh created chances, and the Black Knights also put runners on in the fifth after a walk and a hit-by-pitch, but timely hits proved elusive.
Despite the loss, Flanders' performance stood out, as she consistently worked out of jams, recorded several strikeouts, and kept Fordham's offense in check, giving Army a chance throughout a closely played 2–1 game.
