WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point softball (24-20) extended its win streak to eight games on Wednesday, sweeping the Iona University Gaels (17-20) in a midweek doubleheader inside the Army Softball Complex, first earning a 4-0 shutout, then a 3-2 extra innings victory.
In game one, Army broke through with a decisive middle-inning rally and leaned on strong pitching from Amanda Eaglin and Katelyn Flanders to secure a 4-0 win over Iona.
At the plate, Newburn led the way in game one with two RBIs, while Laub added a key run-scoring hit and Moosbrugger provided a clutch pinch-hit double. Tepley also contributed multiple hits at the top of the lineup, helping set the tone for Army's offense.
In game two, Army battled back from an early deficit and leaned on clutch relief pitching, timely defense, and a walk-off swing to defeat Iona 3-2 in eight innings.
The win was fueled by key defensive plays, shutdown work from Katelyn Flanders, and a game-winning home run from Ashton White, with Hannah Laub also adding a home run in the second inning.
Alongside making her 200th career start in 200 games played and her walk-off home run, Ashton White finished the day with a team-high four hits with two RBIs through the games, while also adding a double in game two.
Tayten Moore finished with three hits in four at-bats in game two, with Sienna Tepley and Hannah Laub also adding three hits through the two games, with Laub also finishing with two RBIs.
Caitlyn Newburn added two hits with two RBIs. Makaila Moosbrugger added an RBI double, with Mia Bonsignore and Breanna Coonfare also adding hits. Coonfare also finished the day with three outfield assists, two catching runners at home.
In terms of pitching, it was relief pitcher Katelyn Flanders who had a strong outing, finishing the day pitching 5.0 innings in relief, adding a team-high six strikeouts while forcing batters to bat .063 against her, finishing 1-0 and earning a save.
Amanda Eaglin received the start and win in game one, earning three strikeouts in four innings of work, with batters averaging .143 off Eaglin. Eaglin also surpassed Renee Poirier to be sixth all-time in career strikeouts.
GAME 1
Eaglin set the tone early in the circle, striking out two in the first inning and working efficiently through the opening frames.
She kept Iona off balance with a mix of strikeouts and weak contact, retiring nine of the first 10 batters she faced and not allowing a hit through the first four innings.
Army's offense broke through in the third with a strong, two-out rally. Sienna Tepley started things with a single and after an error, put two on. Ashton White added another base hit to load the bases.
Caitlyn Newburn delivered the big swing with a two-RBI single to right center, scoring Tepley and Taylor Brown. Moments later, Hannah Laub followed with an RBI single to bring home White and extend the lead to 3-0.
Eaglin continued to cruise into the fifth before handing the ball to Flanders with two runners on and no outs. Flanders entered a high-pressure situation and immediately delivered, helping Army escape the inning without allowing a run by inducing weak contact and working out of the jam.
Army added an insurance run in the sixth. After a walk and a pitching change, Makaila Moosbrugger came through with a pinch-hit RBI double to right center, scoring a run to push the lead to 4-0.
Flanders remained in control from there, navigating traffic in the sixth and shutting the door in the seventh. She worked around baserunners with composure, stranding multiple runners and finishing the combined shutout.
GAME 2
Army starter Breanna Izzo and the defense worked around early pressure in the first, stranding two runners despite an error. In the bottom half, Tayten Moore singled and stole second, but a line-drive double play cut the inning short, keeping the game scoreless.
Iona capitalized on defensive miscues to score two unearned runs and take a 2-0 lead. A two-out single threatened another run, but was stopped in its tracks when Breanna Coonfare connected with Tayten Moore at home plate to tag the runner for the outfield assist.
Then, Army responded immediately in the bottom half, as Hannah Laub launched a solo home run, her fourth home run of the season, to center to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Army's defense came up big in the third, stranding three runners and preventing further damage. In the bottom half, Moore reached again, and White delivered with an RBI double to right center, tying the game at 2-2.
Both teams were held in check in the fourth, with Army's defense settling in and making routine plays behind the pitching staff. Army turned in another clean defensive inning in the fifth, highlighted by strong infield play.
In the bottom half, Sienna Tepley and Moore reached, but another double play ended the threat and kept the score tied.
The Black Knights delivered one of the biggest defensive plays of the game in the sixth. With runners advancing, Army executed a clutch double play from center field to home, with Coonfare and Moore connecting again and cutting down the go-ahead run at the plate and preserving the 2-2 tie. Iona threatened again later in the inning, but came up short.
Flanders entered in relief in the seventh and immediately faced pressure, as Iona put runners in scoring position with stolen bases. She responded with a key strikeout to strand both runners and keep the game tied. Army went quietly in the bottom half, sending the game to extras.
In the eighth inning, Flanders took full control, retiring the side in order with two strikeouts and a groundout, shutting down any chance of an Iona breakthrough.
Then, in the bottom of the inning, after one out, White delivered the decisive moment, crushing a walk-off home run to left field to give Army the 3-2 victory.
