No. 14 Men’s Lacrosse Earns Share of Patriot League Regular Season Crown with Dominant Win Over Colgate

WEST POINT, N.Y. – For the fourth consecutive season, Army wrote its name in the Patriot League record books as a regular season champion after the Black Knights delivered a dominant 17-6 win over the Colgate Raiders in their 2026 regular season finale.
Army (11-3, 6-2 Patriot League) secured its first win over Colgate (5-8, 4-4 Patriot League) at home since 2022 as the Black Knights surged to a 17-6 win over the Raiders on Friday night.
The Black Knights hit the ground running and kept the pace hot in the night game to accumulate their 11-goal lead.
Brayden Fountain led the Black Knights in goals with four while Gunnar Fellows led Army in points with five from two goals and three assists.
Fellows tied with CJ Monturio for a game-high four ground balls to help Army win the ground ball battle 32-18.
Tommy Stines led all players with three caused turnovers while Sam Ralston, Jimmy Manley, Keagan Treacy, and John Sullivan added caused turnovers to Army's tally.
Senior goalkeeper Sean Byrne tallied 12 saves in goal for the Black Knights to clear the 400 career saves threshold and move to a .604 save percentage on the season – the third highest save percentage in the nation this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Black Knights set the tone early in the Friday night finale as senior goalkeeper Sean Byrne broke open the scoring with his third career goal when he launched a shot down the length of the field less than 90 seconds into the contest.
After a shot from the Raiders and the first save of the game for Byrne, Army got back on the attack and sophomore attackman Hill Plunkett doubled Army's tally two minutes later after Gunnar Fellows sent him a pass from the X the Plunkett fired into the back of the Colgate net.
The Raiders challenged Army's resolve a minute later when the visitors responded with their first goal of the game.
The contest entered a standoff until Colgate broke through Army's defense for the second time with less than five minutes on the clock to bring the game to a 2-2 tie.
Fellows found the back of the net for the first time Friday night 30 seconds later after Sam Ralston caused a turnover from the Raiders in the midfield, Jimmy Manley picked up the ground ball, and Grant Masterson found Fellows on the move to put Army ahead 3-2.
The Black Knights held on to the momentum as Brayden Fountain got onto the scoreboard unassisted as he rounded the left side of the goal and fired around three defenders to give Army a two-goal lead that held through the final two minutes of the first quarter.
Army's defense broke open the scoring in the second quarter as John Sullivan fired a shot from the 45-yard line that found a home in the back of the net for his third career goal two minutes out of the break.
Colgate fought to cut into Army's lead, but a save for Byrne in goal led to a strike from straight in front of the goal from Cal Lambert to extend Army's lead to four goals with eight and a half minutes on the clock.
The Black Knights continued to press their advantage as Evan Plunkett laid out a huge hit in front of the Raiders' goal that drew the Colgate defense towards the side of the cage and opened up a lane for Drew Miller to score his sixth goal of the season and Army's seventh goal of the night.
Army capitalized on the momentum and sophomore Aiden Weisenborn got on the score sheet as Evan Plunkett lofted a pass over the Colgate goal that Weisenborn picked out of the air and fired past the Raiders' goalkeeper on a bounce just after the four-minute mark on the clock,
The sophomore scored again just 56 seconds later when Brayden Fountain found him to the right of Colgate's goal where Weisenborn whipped a shot past the goalkeeper to take Army to a seven-goal lead that held through to halftime.
The two teams locked horns as the third quarter began with both goalkeepers making saves until Colgate snuck their third goal of the game past Byrne five and a half minutes into the quarter.
The Black Knights jumped back on the attack as Hill Plunkett fired a low pass through traffic to Fountain on the edge of the crease where he quickly turned and scored his second goal of the game 80 seconds later.
Firstie Evan Plunkett scored unassisted 66 seconds later as he buried a shot in the top left corner of the goal to extend Army's lead to eight goals.
Army did not let off the gas and immediately went back on the attack after a faceoff win for the Black Knights on a tic-tac-toe play from Grant Masterson to Gunnar Fellows to Brayden Fountain who scored from the doorstep to complete his seventh hat trick of the season only 12 seconds after Plunkett's goal.
The two teams battled it out as the clock ticked down, but the Black Knights kept the pace hot as Fellows found the back of the net once more as Evan Plunkett drew defenders to him to open up space for Fellows to strike from the side of the goal with two and a half minutes left on the clock.
Weisenborn brought the heat as the clock ticked down, scoring a long pole goal with 12 seconds on the clock as he rifled a shot through traffic in front of the goal to complete his hat trick, but Drew Miller would score the final goal of the quarter for Army as the long-stick midfielder let a shot rip from 15 yards out to give Army a 12-goal lead with two seconds on the clock.
The Raiders showed signs of life coming out of the third quarter break, breaking through the Army defense 38 seconds into the fourth quarter, but the Black Knights responded swiftly with the fourth goal of the night for Fountain after Cal Lambert found him with a pass under pressure.
The two teams battled as the final minutes of regulation ticked on and the Black Knights tested the depth of their roster as the final minutes ticked down, both teams made goalie changes with Evan Richardson taking to the field for the Black Knights.
After a save for Richardson and a goal for the Raiders at the five-and-a-half-minute mark, Army sent Tade Wynn to stand in goal with three and a half minutes left in the game.
Freshman Kellye Riordan capitalized on the opportunity to score the first goal of his collegiate career with two and a half minutes left on the clock, dancing around the defense and firing a shot low that slipped into the bottom right corner of the net.
Colgate snuck a goal past Wynn with 39 seconds left on the clock, but Army's squad put on a strong showing to maintain control of the ball after a faceoff win for Patrick Murphy and Army secured its 11th win of the season with an 11-goal lead.
In a tumultuous season for the Patriot League, the Black Knights earned a share of the regular season championship title with the win as they finish the regular season 6-2 against Patriot League opponents, tying for the title alongside Boston University and Loyola Maryland.
With the league's tiebreaking procedures, the Black Knights earn the No. 1 seed for the 2026 Patriot League Men's Lacrosse tournament. The semifinals and championship game of the tournament will take place at West Point on May 1 and May 3.

- Army dominated the score sheet with 30 points to Colgate's seven, leading the score sheet in assists (13-1), shots (43-36), shots on goal (28-21), ground balls (32-18), saves (15-11), successful clears (25-20), faceoff wins (14-11), and caused turnovers (8-3).
