Softball Drops Game One of Series at Colgate
April 03, 2026 | Softball
HAMILTON, N.Y. — Army West Point softball (16-19, 2-1) began its second series of Patriot League play on Friday, taking on the Colgate University Raiders (18-16, 6-1), ultimately falling to the Raiders in five innings, 9-1.
The Black Knights showed early flashes of strong offense and pitching, but could not overcome a pair of big innings from Colgate.
Taylor Brown and Ashton White had the two lone hits for the Black Knights, while Brown earned the lone run, a home run in the third inning.
Meanwhile, the Army pitching unit and defense struggled, allowing nine hits and nine earned runs while only recording three strikeouts. Army starter Breanna Izzo received the loss after pitching 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits, seven runs and one walk.
How It Happened
Army threatened in the opening frame as Ashton White delivered a two-out single, but the Black Knights were unable to bring her around. In the circle, Army starter Breanna Izzo responded with a clean first inning, retiring Colgate in order to keep things scoreless early.
Colgate broke through in the second, using a triple and an RBI single to take a 1–0 lead, but Army answered in the third in a big way.
After two quick outs, Taylor Brown crushed a solo home run to left center, tying the game at 1–1 and providing a spark for the Black Knights' offense.
That momentum was short-lived, however, as Colgate responded immediately in the bottom half. A string of hits, including an RBI single and a two-run double, pushed across three runs and gave Colgate a 4–1 advantage.
Army was unable to generate offense over the next two innings, going quietly in both the fourth and fifth despite patient at-bats earlier in the game.
Meanwhile, Colgate added significant separation in the fourth inning. A two-run home run extended the lead, then after a Colgate double, Katelyn Flanders entered as relief. That did not stop the Raiders' hot bats, with Colgate hitting a three-run homer off Flanders to break the game open at 9–1.
From there, Army's pitching settled things down, but the offense could not mount a comeback. The Black Knights were held without a hit over the final two innings, as Colgate closed out the run-rule victory.
