WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point women's soccer battled No. 7 West Virginia to a 1-1 deadlock through 67 minutes before the unbeaten Mountaineers scored late to escape with a 2-1 win Sunday at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field. West Virginia improved to 4-0-0 with the result, while Army fell to 2-4-0 in front of a season-high crowd of 416.

Head Coach Tracy Chao was proud of her team's fight, going toe-to-toe with a top team in the nation.

Bella Conti led the way for the Black Knights, equalizing in the 68th minute with a strong finish to tie the game at 1-1 after West Virginia had broken through four minutes earlier. Conti was the most dangerous attacker on the field for either side, finishing with a game-high six shots, and continued to test West Virginia's defense in the final 20 minutes with three more attempts after her goal.

Army held its own for long stretches against the top-10 opponent, matching West Virginia with 10 second-half shots and generating several quality opportunities down the stretch. Freshman Isabel Vargas fired off back-to-back shots in the 67th minute that helped set up the tying corner kick sequence, and Sabrina Rogers, Grace Pohlidal and Makaela Morrell all had looks in the second half as the Black Knights pushed for a go-ahead goal.

Karalyn Dail was excellent in net, making six saves and keeping Army within a goal against a West Virginia attack that finished with 20 shots on the day. The Mountaineers ultimately found a breakthrough in the 86th minute on a goal from Saige Wimes, assisted by Gianna Koss, to secure the win.

Despite the loss, Army pushed one of the nation's top-ranked programs to the wire in a hard fought battle.
