WEST POINT, N.Y. - Freshman goalkeeper Winston Boldt made three saves, including a game-saving stop late in the second overtime, as Army and Lafayette played to a scoreless draw on a chilly Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
Despite the tie, Army (7-9-1, 2-3-1 PL) remains in the hunt to earn a spot into Patriot League Tournament, which will be contested next month. The Black Knights need to beat Lehigh next weekend and get some help to secure their first tournament berth since 1996.
Lafayette (7-5-4, 2-2-2 PL) also stays in contention for a tournament berth as the Leopards move into fifth place in the conference standings following today's stalemate. Lafayette will need to win at Bucknell next weekend and get help to qualify for the postseason.
"There are a lot of positives to take from this game, and the season's not over yet," said Army head coach Russell Payne. "We have another important match coming up next week."
Army enjoyed a bevy of scoring chances throughout the match, but the Black Knights were unable to solve Lafayette goalkeeper Graham Heydt, who finished with five saves to earn his sixth shutout of the season.
Boldt was not tested much early, but the first-year keeper made a sprawling save late in regulation and another stop in the closing minutes of the second OT to earn his first career shutout.
"I think Winston has really gone from strength to strength in the last few games that he's played," said Payne of his rookie goalkeeper. "He continues to give us more depth and more competition at the goalkeeper spot, which is what you want. I'm really happy for him. He worked really hard over the first 13 games of the season to get himself to a place where he can play, and he's done well with his opportunity."
Army held a 6-3 edge in shots during the first half. Freshman Tommy Jaeger put a pair of long shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes, but Heydt was able to corral both efforts. Fellow freshman Elliott McGilbra had a pair of quality opportunities late in the half, but his strike from the top of the box went high in the 39th minute and his header off a corner kick went just wide in the 45th minute.
Lafayette's best scoring chance in the first half came in the 23rd minute when Kyle Scharfenberg's volley caromed off the right post and bounced out of harm's way.
The Leopards generated their first shot on goal of the contest in the 50th minute as Blake Fink hit a hard low shot that a diving Boldt was able to snare.
Moments later, McGilbra dribbled around a Lafayette defender on the left side of the box, but his strike from 16 yards out went just wide of the near post.
Freshman David Rouleau had a couple of chances later in the second half, but both of his shots went just wide.
Army held a 2-0 edge in shots during the first overtime period, but neither attempt was on goal.
Both teams fired two shots apiece in the second extra session. Army earned a pair of corner kicks in the period, but the Black Knights were unable to cash in. Arguably the best scoring chance in the second OT came with 45 seconds to play when Fink dribbled past the Army defense and was one-on-one with Boldt. Army's keeper sprinted out to cut off the angle and then smothered Fink's shot.
McGilbra paced Army offensively, firing a team-high four shots. Jaeger, meanwhile, led the Black Knights with three shots on goal.
Army outshot Lafayette 17-11, and the Black Knights enjoyed a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Army will close out its regular-season schedule on Saturday, Nov. 5, when the Black Knights travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to face Patriot League rival Lehigh. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
