Women's Cross Country Readies for Paul Short
October 02, 2015 | Women's Cross Country
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's cross country team continues its 2015 campaign at the Paul Short Run, hosted by Patriot League foe Lehigh on Saturday, Oct. 3, with the race beginning at 9:30 a.m. Â
While the Black Knights have competed at Paul Short every year since 2007, this year's team does not have the luxury of experience with five of the nine members being freshmen.
"More than half of our team are freshmen so they may not have ever been at Paul Short before," said head coach Mike Smith. "It will be a different experience for them. This will be the women's first time competing over six-kilometers, which is our championship distance. This meet is a good opportunity for our women to test themselves over the collegiate distance. It also allows us to measure ourselves at the midpoint of the year and helps us get ready for the championship season. The dual meet against Navy and the Patriot League Championship meet are meets that we focus on, so this is a good indicator of where we are headed into those meets."
With Hurricane Joaquin looming over the minds of most of the Northeastern population, Smith and the Black Knights are in the minority with their lack of concern. In fact, the team welcomes the challenge with open arms.
"All of our runners are used to suffering," noted Smith. "A little bit of bad weather is not going to affect us in the least bit. What these plebes went through in the summer is much more difficult than any race they could ever run. A storm is something that is not a big deal at all to our team. They welcome conditions that try others' ability to compete."
