Sprint Football Returns Home to Face Penn
October 22, 2015 | Sprint Football
WEST POINT, N.Y. – After a month-long hiatus away from home, the Army West Point sprint football team returns to the confines of Shea Stadium on Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff against Penn.
"We are definitely happy to finally come back to our home field," said head coach Mark West. "Any time you get the chance to play at home in front of your home crowd, it's exciting."
The Black Knights wrapped up their four-game road trip with a gritty performance, earning a 24-0 victory over Franklin Pierce for the team's record-breaking fifth shutout of the season. The shutout marks the most shutouts in a single season in the program's 58-year history.
"It's hard to put your finger on one thing when you talk about our defense," said West. "The camaraderie of the defense is very tight. The coaching is obviously really good. The game plan that our defensive coordinator Tom Pinder, linebackers coach Joe Sessa and defensive line coach Frank Nucaro make for each week is great. We just have a lot of speed, toughness and togetherness. The guys communicate very well together, and they've been fortunate to keep the other team out of the end zone all year."
Army holds a commanding 53-6 series lead over the Quakers dating back to the inaugural 1957 season. The Black Knights have won the past six meetings between the two teams with an average margin greater than three touchdowns. The last meeting between these two teams occurred a year ago Oct. 17 with Army earning a commanding 47-7 victory at Franklin Field in Philadelphia after totaling more than 400 yards of offense.
The Quakers aerial attack has had an unmatched level of production through the first five weeks. The only team that has thrown for more than 1,000 yards leads the CSFL with 234 yards per game. That charge is led by Mike McCurdy who leads the league in total offense (257.6 ypg), completions (80), passing yards (1,167) and passing touchdowns (10). McCurdy's favorite target has been Henry Mason who tops all other CSFL receivers in receptions (31), receiving yards (530), and receiving touchdowns (7).
"With Penn, you know you're going up against the top quarterback in the league. He can really throw the ball well, has a strong arm and is accurate. For us, it's about putting pressure on him and making him as uncomfortable as possible."
