Women’s Cross Country to Begin Postseason
October 30, 2015 | Women's Cross Country
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's cross country team will look to its seniors to lead the team's five freshman through their first Patriot League Championship race on Saturday from Hamilton, N.Y., starting at noon.
The Black Knights are looking to bounce back after falling to service academy rival Navy on Oct. 16. They were paced by freshman Abby Halbrook, who finished second with a time of 22:24.58. Halbrook earned the Patriot League's Female Rookie of the Week honor with that performance.
"I think if you looked at what happened in the Navy meet, you saw that our freshmen were up in our top five," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "The growth has been significant. They're contributing at a pretty high level, especially when your first runner is a plebe. Our captain, Lindsay Gabow, Madison Hill or Abby Halbrook could be the one that runs first for us. Those three are the ones who are going to lead us, and Payton Padgett has moved up pretty well."
Army's youth has certainly been a key factor to this season with 17 of the 25 scorers throughout the year being freshmen. Halbrook has led this group by finishing as Army's No. one or two runner in each of the three races she has competed in this season. Cassie Mundekis has also been a consistent contributor this season, scoring in all five races on the year. The Manito, Ill., native had her best performance of 2015 on Sept. 5, in the season-opening dual at Maine where she finished third-overall with a 5K time of 19:33.6.
The women's race will be at noon after the men's race at 11 a.m.
