WEST POINT, N.Y. – A strong performance by the Army West Point rifle team highlighted Monday morning's meet with No. 12 North Carolina State. The Wolfpack edged the Black Knights 4653-4641 in aggregate, winning smallbore 2306-2297 and air rifle 2347-2344 but the Cadets 2344 in air rifle was a season-best. The Black Knights are now 2-7 this year and 1-5 in the GARC while NC State improves to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in conference.
"We talked after the match on Saturday (against Kentucky) and nobody was very happy with their performance," said head coach Web Wright in regard to overcoming Army's loss to the Wildcats. "There were a couple highlights but for the most part everybody knew they could do better. I think we came more energized and more focused today. The mood was just a little bit different."
Junior Marvin Lewis paced the way for Army in air rifle. His score of 591 was a career-high and a new season-best for any Black Knight. Lewis placed third in air rifle and the Cadets took positions three through eight in the event. Lewis' 1166 aggregate score was good for third place as well.
"Marvin shot really well," said coach Wright. "Last couple shots he really bear downed and shot some good scores."
Freshman Nathan Brewer earned runner-up honors in smallbore with a 580 score. It is only the 10th time this season anyone on Army has shot a 580 or higher in smallbore. He placed fourth in aggregate with an 1162.
The Black Knights also saw personal-bests from Rick Arnold in smallbore (571), Payne Nunn in air rifle (572), and Andrew Solomonides in air rifle (570).
North Carolina State was led by two impressive performances. Lucas Kozeniesky took medalist honors in aggregate (1180) and smallbore (588). The former is tied for the 22nd-highest total in the NCAA this season while the latter was tied for the 15th-best score. Caitlyn Ford, who took runner-up honors in aggregate (1175) and medalist honors in air rifle (596) was just the 21st individual this season to score a 596 or higher.
Army's next match is against Akron on January 31 at 9 a.m. before traveling to Navy on February 6 for the Star Match.
"We have about two weeks to work some things out and then we go to the collegiate sectional and our match against Akron in Palmyra, Pa.," said coach Wright. "We get a match to try some things out and then the week after that is Navy. Everybody is amped up about that."
