THE MEET
- The Army West Point men's gymnastics team welcomes seven teams for this year's annual West Point Open. Â The Black Knights, ranked No. 13 in the preseason College Gymnastics Association (CGA) Coaches Poll, will be joined by fifth-ranked Penn State, No. 7 Nebraska, along with collegiate teams Navy (No. 12) and Springfield College (No. 16). Rounding out the rest of the field are club teams Arizona State (No. 15) and Temple (No. 18).
- Penn State will be challenged to defend its title with Nebraska, Army and Navy among its top competition. Â The Huskers are joining the field this year as Army will be the host site for the 2017 National Collegiate Gymnastics Championships - April 21-22 - at Christl Arena, while the Nittany Lions and Midshipmen have been regulars at this meet over the years.
- Penn State will be looking to rely heavily on its seniors this season as the team looks to build off solid 2016 performances and a fifth-place finish at the NCAAs.
- While Army has a veteran squad returning, Navy will be young following the graduation of 10 Midshipmen.
- At last year's NCAA's, the Huskers, a member of the Big Ten, missed out on a spot in the finals by .400 points. The team finished fourth in their session.
- Springfield College finished fifth followed by Temple at the 2016 ECAC Championships hosted by Army.
Â
2016 WEST POINT OPEN
- Penn State, coming off a fifth-place finish at the 2016 NCAAs, claimed its third straight title at last year's West Point Open and 18th overall.
