Army Sweeps Hartford in Midweek Doubleheader

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point softball team used solid defense and pitching to take the midweek doubleheader against Hartford, 5-1 and 3-0, Wednesday at the Army Softball Complex.
The Black Knights improved to 24-11 overall, while the Hawks dropped to 3-26.

- Army moves to 6-4 all-time against Hartford and has now won the last four meetings.
- The Black Knights received multi-hit efforts from Emily Ballesteros and Emily Gray in game one and Lacey Swafford and Katie Ontiveros in game two.
- Ballesteros blasted the first home run of her career in the third inning of game one. She later added her team-best third triple of the season.
- Renee Poirier went the distance for the seventh time this season in game one to take the team-lead while tying Caroline Smith for the most wins with eight.
- She became the first Army pitcher to reach 50 strikeouts this season.
- Tyler McKinney recorded her first hit since 2015 with a bunt single in the third inning of the night cap.
- Macey Newbary tossed the first complete game of her career by shutting out the Hawks in game two.

- Army scored five runs on seven hits and documented its ninth clean slate defensively, while the Hawks scored one run on three hits and committed two errors.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE
- Renee Poirier retired nine of the first 10 batters she faced, only allowing a two-out walk in the second inning.
- The Black Knights got on the board in the second inning on a bases-loaded ground out by Izzy Gates that plated a pair. Alee Rashenskas hustled all the way from second to score on the play, sliding in just before the throw.
- Emily Ballesteros smashed her first-career home run facing a full count in the third inning to extend Army's lead to 3-0.
- Hartford responded in the top of the fourth with its only run of the day on a one-out single that ricochet off of the Army first baseman, allowing the runner on second to score.
- Army extended its lead back to three runs in the fifth inning when Ballesteros scored on a wild pitch after she tripled down the right field line. The Black Knights added their final run of game one on an RBI single from Lacey Swafford in the sixth that scored Tyler McKinney.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO
- Army once again jumped out to an early lead as Lacey Swafford scored on a wild pitch with two outs.
- After rookie Macey Newbary set down the Hawks in order in the first inning, an absolute missile from Kennedy Harrison in right field prevented Danielle DeMarco from scoring and ended the top of the second for Hartford.
- Newbary settled in after a difficult second inning, setting down nine of the next 10 batters she faced.
- Tyler McKinney opened the bottom of the third for Army with her first hit since 2015 before stealing second and scoring on an infield hit by Swafford to extend the Black Knights' lead to 3-0.
- Army threatened again in the sixth, but was unable to convert a bases loaded situation.
