Army Set for Conference Championships

WEST POINT, N.Y. – After a two week hiatus, the Army West Point gymnastics team will return to the mat for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships held on Saturday, April 8, in Chicago, Ill. The meet will begin at 3 p.m. ET from the host site of University of Illinois at Chicago.

- Nathan Goff leads the Black Knights in the all-around with an average score of 80.583. He set a season-high of 81.900 in the meet against Navy and has scored over 80.25 on three other occasions.
- On the floor exercise, Army is grounded by Seth Cannon's consistent performances and 13.700 average marks. The junior posted a season-high 13.900 in the event at William & Mary.
- Leo Genders (13.450), Goff (13.383) and Erik Del Cid (13.333) are also the Cadets' top competitors on the floor.
- Andre Hufnagel and Goff have been standouts on the pommel horse this season with highs of 14.500 and 13.950, respectively. Elijah-Ty Phelps and Brandon Shively have also been key contributors both with four-score averages of 13.233.
- Ryan Wilson has excelled for Army on the vault and rings. He is currently second in the ECAC on the vault (14.317) and eighth (13.500) on rings. Wilson has scored over 14.000 on vault during six events in the 2017 season.
- Another high scorer on vault is Genders who boasts a season-high of 14.450 and a four-score average of 14.283.
- Goff (13.533), Nick McAfee (13.317) and Grant Cullen (13.267) top the Black Knights on parallel bars. Goff's 13.900 at Springfield was the team's best score of the year.
- Army takes up the top two spots on high bar in the league. Goff is the only competitor in the ECAC who's four-score average ranks over 14.000 at 14.067. He is followed by Genders (13.938) in second, although the senior captain has edged Goff in the season-high category 14.600-14.500.
- Alejandro Tombrink will also stand out on the high bar from the Cadets' roster with a season-high of 13.700.
SCOUTING THE ECAC
- Apart from Army, Navy, Springfield, UIC and William & Mary will also be in attendance for the championship.
- The winning squad no longer gets an automatic birth to the NCAA Tournament after a rule change effective this season, but the Midshipmen sit on the bubble at 12th with an average of 402.933. The Tribe (397.783) and the Black Knights (394.967) closely follow at No. 13 and No. 14, respectively.
- Navy, William & Mary and Army have all posted team scores over 400 this season.
- The Cadets lead the way on the pommel horse with a four-best average of 65.533 and are first in raw scores on the high bar (69.350) and vault (69.400).
2016 ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
- Last season at the ECAC Championships, the Black Knights and Midshipmen tied for first as both squads amassed 423.400 points.
- Navy advanced to the NCAAs as a team due to a technicality, but the Black Knights sent nine competitors as individuals.
- Head Coach Dr. Doug Van Everen repeated as the ECAC Coach of the Year as he shared the honor with Navy's head coach Kip Simmons.
- It was also the second straight year that Carmine Giglio and Carl Schrade were named Co-Assistants of the Year.
