Ollar Set To Compete At NCAA Championship
November 16, 2018 | Men's Cross Country
MADISON, WIS. – Junior Roman Ollar of the Army West Point men's cross country team is set to compete at the NCAA Championship at the University of Wisconsin on Saturday.
The West Linn, Ore., native qualified for the event after a third-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional in Buffalo, N.Y., the best finish by a Cadet in the history of the regional format. Ollar's appearance at the NCAA Championship marks the second straight year that Army will be represented at the event, a feat the program hasn't accomplished since 1993-94. John Valeri qualified for the event in 2017 and finished 160th.Â
"It just shows that what we're doing works and that we're doing it right," Ollar said. "The training and the opportunities that we've had have been amazing."
Ollar is just the fourth Black Knight to qualify for the championship event since 1998. That event was headlined by Army's last All-American, Scott Goff, who finished 23rd. Ollar can become the Army's first All-American honoree in two decades by placing in the top-40.
Ollar has finished in the top-five in five of Army's six races this season, including team-high finishes in four of those events. Â
"We start training in the summer, that's when it really starts," Ollar said. "We have a couple of races at the beginning, but we really don't start testing our metal until Army-Navy. That's where we really see where we need to be for the regional meet in order to reach our goal which is to make nationals. Hopefully next year we can get the whole team to go."
