WEST POINT, N.Y. – No. 12 Army West Point rifle team will travel to Morgantown, W.Va., to compete in the Great America Rifle Conference Championships.
Last year at the GARC Championships Army placed second in smallbore with a score of 2311.
Army finished behind defending champion and No. 2-ranked West Virginia's score of 2341, while outscoring No. 6 Kentucky by five points for the runner-up spot. It was the Black Knights' highest championship finish in this discipline since capturing the title in 2012. In air rifle Army scored 2338.
West Virginia defended its title with a 4725 aggregate after sweeping the team titles in both smallbore and air rifle. Nebraska was second (4679), Kentucky took third (4667) followed by North Carolina State (4660).
Army's aggregate of 4649 was good for fifth place.
Coach's Quotes:
"We will head to Morgantown, West Virginia to compete in the Great America Rifle Conference Championship," said head coach Web Wright. "We are one of the nine schools in that conference."
"At this match, there will be 26 firing points, so you can put more people through. Its fewer relays. It's in a fieldhouse with bleachers so there is more spectator seating, so everyone will be there and see what is going on."
"In the past, we have placed in smallbore, and put people in the finals before which is the top eight of each discipline. Then they go through a series of shots and are eliminated along the way. Traditionally we've done pretty well.'
ARMY (7-8, GARC 3-5)
Up Next:
Payne Nunn will travel to the NCAA Championships as a representative for Army on March 9-10 in Charleston, S.C.
