Army Falls to Penn State in Virtual Opener

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point gymnastics team fell to No. 6 ranked Penn State, 383.650-355.200, in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon in a virtual meet with the Black Knights competing at Gross Sports Center.
Freshman Connor Cavanagh and sophomore Jacob Nauman posted the top score of the meet registering identical 14.0s in tying for first place honors on vault in leading the No. 12 ranked Black Knights.
"It felt good to finally get back out there," Head Coach Doug Van Everen. "We got to shake some rust off and can look forward to getting some of our regulars back for our next meet against Oklahoma."Â
HIGHLIGHTS AND NOTES:
FLOOR EXERICSE:
- The competition started on floor exercise where Corban Barstow registered a team best 12.75 with Graham Shaw next at 12.6 followed by Mitch McHugh's 12.45.
- Penn State registered the top score of 13.55 as the No. 6 Nittany Lions outpointed Army 64.00-61.35 in the opening event.
POMMEL HORSE:
- Leading Army's charge on pommel horse was senior Matthew Martin with a 12.75 followed by a 12.15 from classmate Joe Minus.
- Penn State's Nick Muck took top honors with a 13.7 en route to outpointing Army 65.4-57.4.
STILL RINGS:
- The third of the six events was still rings with Jacob Armstrong turning in Army's top score of 12.30 and Martin notching a 12.0 as Army trailed Penn State 63.5-57.75 in that event. High score in the event was a 13.5 posted by the Nittany Lions.
VAULT:
- Nauman and Cavanagh led the way in an event in which Nauman shined in last year. Both posted a 14.0 in outpointing Penn State's Robbie Shamp (13.9) for top honors as Army denied the Nittany Lions from capturing all six events.
PARALLEL BARS:
- The No. 5 rotation was parallel bars with Patrick Armstrong leading Army with a 12.45 followed by Kiernan Reagan's 12.10. Penn State's Alex Frack was the top scorer with a 13.0 in leading his team to a 63.75-58.45 decision in that event.
HIGH BAR:
- The final rotation with Armstrong again topping the Black Knights this time with a 12.15 and Kalvin Kingshill close behind at 12.0. Frack captured his second straight event posting a 12.65 as Penn State outpointed Army 57.9-51.75.
NEXT UP: Army returns to action when it takes on Oklahoma in a virtual meet on Saturday, Jan. 30.
