Gymnasts Turn In Strong Performance Against No. 1 Oklahoma

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The No. 8 Army West Point gymnastics team posted team and individual season highs in a 413.4-375.1 loss to No. 1 Oklahoma Saturday afternoon with the Black Knights competing at Gross Sports Center in a virtual meet.

The undefeated Sooners claimed the top team and individual marks in all six events.

Head coach Doug Van Everen was pleased with his team's performance from start to finish against its second top five nationally ranked team. "Overall, the team did better today following our season opener a couple of weeks ago against Penn State."

"We still have guys out, so I know we will do better soon," Van Everen added. "High bar is a weak event for us, and we need improvement. Â We are working hard and moving forward."

FLOOR EXERCISE
- Army turned in a season-high 64.65 in the opening event with junior Matthew Davis posting the highest mark of 13.85 in his first competition this season. Sophomore Corban Barstow followed with a 13.1 hitting the 13-point range for the first time this season.            Â
- The Black Knights' team score of 64.65 is a season best, bettering their previous mark by over three points
POMMEL HORSE
- Matthew Martin led Army in this event with a 13.35, the second straight meet he has been the top scorer for Army along with turning in the team's highest placing in taking fourth in the meet Davis, competing as an all-arounder, posted a 12.1
STILL RINGS
- Senior Kiernan Regan garnered the Black Knights' top score behind a season high 12.7 and Martin followed with his season best 12.35 along with a 12.3 from Davis.
- Army's team total of 61.7 was almost four points higher than its first meet of the season.
VAULT
- Miguel Aquino, a sophomore, turned in a career-high 14.05 for the highest score of the season in this event while placing fifth overall followed by freshman Connor Cavanagh equaling his season mark of 14.0 in placing sixth.
PARALLEL BARS
- Davis was Army's top point producer again with a top mark in placing sixth with a 13.2 with Reagan next with a season score of 13.15.
- Army shattered its previous team mark by over 11 points in posting a 63.7.
HIGH BAR
- Davis again led the way with a 12.3 followed by an 11.75 from Patrick Armstrong and 11.7 by Kalvin Kinigshill. Army also posted a new team high of 57.2.
ALL-AROUND
- Davis took third in all-around with a 77.4.
