April 03, 2023 | Softball
EASTON, Pa. -- The Army West Point softball team (13-21, 5-1 PL) split the Sunday afternoon doubleheader vs. the Lafayette Leopards (3-22-1, 1-5), falling in Game 1, 5-4 and then won Game 2 by mercy-rule, racking up 18 runs, in an 18-0 victory.
In Game 1, Army trailed 5-0 but used a four-run sixth inning to get back into the game. It started with an Angelia Bebek RBI single, and then a Kayla Edwards single to score Bebek. With the bases loaded, Kaci Donaldson was hit by the pitch to score the third run of the inning. Ellie Caldwell would then single to right to drive home another run.
However, Army would leave runners on second and third when Lafayette would turn a huge double play to end the inning as Army tried to bunt home the tying run.
Army starter Alicyn Grete worked 6.0 innings giving up only three earned runs and striking out seven.
In Game 2, Army's bats came alive pounding 18 runs on 20 hits. Six Black Knights batters had multi-hit performances, as Brook Mitchell and Kayla Edwards each had four RBIs.
Army attacked early scoring four in the first which saw Ellie Caldwell have a two-run single.
Army would add to the lead in the third, scoring seven runs to open an 11-0 advantage. RBI doubles were hit by Maddie Wilkes, Grace Snyder and Brook Mitchell. In the game, Army slugged six extra-base hits.
On the mound, freshman Breanna Izzo threw a 5.0 inning complete game shutout in the mercy-ruled game. Izzo struck out eight and walked zero.
At 5-1 in the Patriot League, Army only trails Lehigh 6-0 in the win column.
