No. 14 Women's Lacrosse Suffers First Defeat of Season to No. 13 Yale, 14-13

WEST POINT, NY - No. 14 Army West Point women's lacrosse (11-1, 5-0 Patriot League) suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of No. 13 Yale (9-2, 3-0 Ivy League) on Tuesday night at Michie Stadium.
Entering the fourth quarter trailing by two, Army was able to tie the score in the final frame before giving up a pair of goals in final seven minutes which proved to be the difference.
Allison Reilly paced the attack with a career-high four goals scored while Brigid Duffy posted a career-best four assists as part of a five-point night. Kathleen Sullivan registered five assists to help facilitate on the offensive end while Julia Gorajek and Julia Franzoni each recorded hat tricks.
The Black Knights fell behind early, with Yale scoring four times in the opening 4:02. Army struggled to clear the ball in the opening quarter, with a success rate of just three for nine in the opening frame. Franzoni had gotten Army on the board early before a seven-plus minute stretch of scoreless lacrosse. Madison Warne eventually made it a 4-2 Yale lead with 3:30 as Sullivan tabbed her second assist of the game. The Black Knights brought it back to within one in the final minute, as Gorajek finished off a feed from Duffy to make it 4-3 through one.
The Bulldogs were able to pull out to a 6-3 lead midway through the second as the Army offense remained stagnant. Franzoni got Army on the board again with 6:05 left in the half after cleaning up a rebound off her saved free-position attempt. Yale responded to make it a three-goal advantage once again, before Army got a spark from its plebe duo.
Duffy was able to find Reilly for back-to-back scores in under a minute to bring Army back within one with three minutes to go before the break. Warne then fired home a free-position attempt from long-distance which tied the score back up for the first time since it being 1-1 in the opening two minutes. The Black Knights eventually took an 8-7 lead into halftime after Duffy poured in her 45th goal of the season give Army its first advantage.
Coming out for the second half, Sullivan continued to facilitate on the offensive end, assisting to Gorajek which gave Army its first two-goal lead of the game. Reilly's third tally of the contest then came at the 10:31 mark as the Black Knights then held a 10-8 lead before a six-minute scoreless stretch as each team saw turnovers and shots saved from Lacey Bartholomay and Cami Donadio.
Yale was able to take advantage of multiple free-position attempts at the end of the quarter, scoring four unanswered goals in the final 4:36 of the frame, with Fallon Vaughn scoring the final three which gave Yale a 12-10 lead heading into the final 15 minutes. The Bulldogs fired 10 shots on goal in the third compared to Army's three while outscoring the Black Knights 5-2.
Army responded in the fourth, with Reilly taking another pass from Duffy in for a score to cut the deficit in half. Gorajek fired home on Army's next possession, marking her third goal and Sullivan's fourth assist of the game as the score was knotted at 12 with 10:16 to play.
After a pair of Army turnovers with the chance to take the lead again, the Bulldogs jumped back ahead by two with 6:31 left via back-to-back goals. Needing a goal with under four minutes left, the shot clock was winding down for the Black Knights, as Sullivan fed Franzoni with little time to work with. Franzoni launched a long-range effort into the ground and into the back of the net for a pivotal goal which made it 14-13 with 3:43 remaining.
Army was able to get a stop after the Bulldogs secured the draw control, setting up one more possession with two minutes remaining with a chance to tie the score and force overtime. Army got a good look in front, with Duffy finding Gorajek who then saw her shot saved brilliantly from Donadio in the cage for Yale. The Bulldogs were able to secure possession off the save and run out the remainder of the clock, handing Army its first loss of the season.
