WEST POINT, NY - No. 14 Army West Point women's lacrosse (12-1, 6-0 Patriot League) remained unbeaten in the conference with a 15-7 victory over Bucknell (5-7, 1-4 Patriot League) on senior day at Michie Stadium.
Senior Kathleen Sullivan broke the program's all-time points record with her assist in the fourth quarter on a Julia Franzoni score. She surpassed the previous record of 163 held by Caroline Raymond as Sullivan now sits at 165 career points following a team-high five point effort against the Bison.
Army outscored Bucknell 8-1 in the second half, shutting out the Bison for the final 26:38 of the contest. Lindsey Serafine stopped six of seven shots in the cage for Army in relief to lead the stout defensive effort. Jolie Riedell and Julia Franzoni each posted hat tricks while Julia Gorajek and Brigid Duffy posted two-goal efforts in the win.
Army fell behind 2-0 early before finding its first goal more than halfway into the quarter. Gorajek fed Riedell for the score before scoring her own less than two minutes later to tie the score at two. Margaret Williams then gave Army its first lead with a score after coming from behind the cage with a shot for her first career tally. Sullivan was able to score her 26th goal of the season in the final minute which gave the Black Knights a 4-3 advantage after one. Shots were even at six apiece with Army turning the ball over three times through the early stages.
It was a back and forth second quarter which eventually saw each team score three times. Riedell scored another before Bucknell's Allie Boyce converted on a pair of free-position shots which made it a 5-5 game. Franzoni opened her account for the day while Gorajek capped a four-point first half with a goal in the final two minutes as Army took a 7-6 lead into the break. Lacey Bartholomay made four saves in the half as Bucknell outshot Army 14-12 in the opening 30 minutes.
Army then locked in defensively for the second half, allowing just one goal which came less than five minutes into the third quarter. Duffy scored her first of the game with a cut to the cage as Army still held a one-goal lead with three minutes to go in the frame. Allison Reilly got on the scoresheet in style with a ball-fake into a rocket of a shot that found the back of the cage. Riedell got her hat trick on Army's next possession and carried momentum into the fourth with a 10-7 lead.
Lindsey Serafine made three saves in both the third and fourth quarters to limit the Bison, as Army scored five times in the final frame to make it a 15-7 final. Madeline Lenkart scored her fifth of the campaign on a free-position before Duffy scored her second after causing a turnover in Army's offensive third and taking it herself for the score. At the 8:09 mark, Franzoni scored again to make it a 13-7 game, as Sullivan's assist on the goal gave her the new program record with 164. Sullivan quickly reached 165 with another helper to Sarah Chernik. Army scored 15 goals on 24 shot attempts in the game, while winning 17 of 26 draw controls (.654).
