MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Army rifle team took on No. 1-ranked West Virginia in a Great America Rifle match at the host's WVU Rifle Range Saturday. Despite suffering a 4739-4693 defeat to the defending conference champions Mountaineers, the Black Knights (5-3, 2-2 GARC) showed they were equal to the challenge.
Army's sharpshooter, averaging a 4692 aggregate over their last five matches, finished among the leaders in both disciplines, while tying their season aggregate of 4693 set against Air Force during the fall season.
Sophomore Chris Jennings led the Black Knights for the second straight week in smallbore, placing fifth with a 588, just a point behind his career high set last week against conference foe Kentucky, and four off the Mountaineers top mark of 592.
In air rifle, junior Briggs Moore turned in the team's highest finish claiming fourth with 595 mark to tie his personal best, set last week, and was just a point behind leader Griffin Lake.
Senior Anusha Pakkam once again continues to set the pace for the team in the aggregate scoring. She posted an 1175 to finish eighth with Jennings just a point behind at 1174.
Army's 2331 smallbore score is just three shy of its season high. Joining Jennings on the leaderboard (588) were senior Kyle Kutz (583), Pakkam (582), Moore (578), firstie Claudi Sigel (575) and junior Ashton O'Connell (574).
The team's air rifle score of 2362 is also just three shy of the season mark set against Akron last November. Rounding out Army's top performers in joining Moore (595) were Pakkam (593, sixth), freshman Ashton Arlington (588, tied season-high) and Jennings (586).
"I'm pleased with how today went for the team," notes the second-year mentor. "We were able to match our season-high on the road and improve our overall NCAA ranking. We are still leaving a lot of points on the table, so our focus going into tomorrow will be to clean up smallbore standing and focus on doing the little things right. We are consistent, now we need to continue to push our standard of excellence to reach that next level." - Head Coach Leighton Dempster
