Rifle Hosts GARC Championships This Weekend

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point rifle team is the host school this weekend, Feb. 24-25, for the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center. The Black Knights are among the seven-team field that includes conference members West Virginia, Kentucky, Akron, Memphis, Ole Miss and Navy.
The competition gets underway Saturday with smallbore and air rifle on Sunday, both starting 8 am. at Tronsrue. Free live results for both days of competition are available HERE.
The awards ceremony crowning the team and individual champions will be held Sunday afternoon following the conclusion of the championship.
Four teams from the GARC are also NCAA bound after qualifying for the eight-team 2024 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Rifle Championships being hosted March 8-9 by West Virginia in Morgantown W.Va. Securing spots are the No. 1 West Virginia Mountaineers, No. 4 Kentucky Wildcats, No. 6 Ole Miss Rebels and No. 7 Navy Midshipmen.
LOOKING AT THE FIELD
West Virginia posted a perfect 6-0 mark in conference matches followed by runner-up Kentucky (5-1) and Akron (3-3) rounding out the top three teams. Memphis, Ole Miss and Army are next with identical 2-4 marks followed by Navy (1-5).
The Mountaineers are the defending GARC champions having outpointed the field with a 4722 to claim their 15th GARC title in 2023. The Rebels were runner-up (4715) followed by the Wildcats (4714) and Midshipmen (4698) in rounding out the top four teams in the field.
At last year's championships, West Virginia captured smallbore (2345) and aggregate (4722) titles with Kentucky and Ole Miss tying for the air rifle title (2379.) In the aggregate score, Old Miss was runner-up (4715), Kentucky third (4714) and Navy fourth (4698).
Army vs. the Field
The Black Knights (8-5, 2-4 GARC) are coming off their finest season since 2014-15 and most wins since 2012-13 under second-year coach Leighton Dempster, who has breathed new life into the program.
In the conferencing team standings, Army is third in smallbore (3-3), tied for fourth in the combined team standings (2-4) and fourth in air rifle (2-4).
Army's conference wins were against Memphis (4671-4648) and Akron (4690-4669), while falling to West Virginia, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Navy.
The Black Knights' highest score of the season is a 4697 fired against Navy. Army's top team mark in smallbore of 2335 was recorded against both Ole Miss and Navy, along with a season best 2365 rifle score recorded against Akron. The Cadets marks in smallbore and aggregate set academy records.
Individually, senor Anusha Pakkam is Army's top shooter in air rifle (596) and aggregate (1183) while tying with Sigel for the second-highest smallbore score of 588.
Chris Jennings is tops on Army's leaderboard in smallbore with a 589, Clint Moore is tied with Pakkam for the second-highest mark in air rifle (595).
Army shows a 4684.667 team average behind a 2327 smallbore and 2357.667 air rifle mark. Pakkam boasts the team's highest air rifle (591.667) and aggregate (1173.917) averages and lists second in smallbore (582.25). Kyle Kutz is the leader in smallbore (582.917), ranks second in aggregate (1170.099) and fourth in air rifle (587.182).
Moore is second in air rifle (589.083) with Jennings listing third in all three categories – smallbore (580.583), air rifle (587.5) and aggregate (1168.083).
