FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Army West Point rifle team headed to Alaska, the Last Frontier, on Saturday for a match against a challenging four-team field hosted by the Nanooks of Fairbanks in opening the second half of its season.
The Black Knights fired their second highest marks of the season in smallbore (2328), air rifle (2361) and aggregate (4689), but fell shy of the Nanooks' winning mark of 4727 as they edged Ole Miss (4725) for the team title followed by Akron (4713) and Army.
Army's Ashton Arington finished among the leaders placing seventh in smallbore firing a 586 (36 centers) along with taking ninth in the aggregate scoring with an 1178, that included a 592 air rifle score (18th place), all personal bests.
Addison Antwiler and Brenna Green led Army in air rifle as both fired 593s with Antwiler edging Green for 14th place with 47 centers. Nicholas Bull turned in a personal best 591 in air along with a 590 by Briggs Moore as they broke into the top 25 placing 22nd and 24th respectively.
Rounding out Army's top shooters in smallbore were Green, 14th place (583), Barbara Forgues, 19th with a personal best 581, followed by Chris Jennings, 21st (581), along with Antwiler, 24th (578).
"Our score doesn't reflect how well the team performed today," commented head coach Leighton Dempster. "We had several personal bests and did a great job handling our emotions on the line. Air rifle took a step in the right direction, so that's good to see going into this championship season, while our transfer to matches from practice went well today. I'm looking forward to continuing to improve Sunday."
