Hockey Takes Down Northeastern 2-1 in Boston, Earns First Win of McKelvie Era

BOSTON, Mass. – After opening the season with at a new arena on the road, Army West Point hockey (1-0-1, 0-0-0 Atlantic Hockey America) traveled to Boston for a Friday evening contest against Northeastern (1-1-0, 0-0-0 Hockey East) in one of the few remaining games left to be played in Matthews Arena.
The Black Knights scored in the first and third periods to defeat the Huskies on their home ice, handing the Hockey East program their first loss of the season.
JJ Cataldo stood between the pipes for Army, delivering 31 saves against 32 shots in the Friday evening win.
The Huskies placed Lawton Zacher in net for their second game of the season where he tallied 21 saves against Army's 23 shots on goal.
The Black Knights jumped out of the gate on a quick pace, putting up 14 shots on goal in the first frame to Northeastern's seven.
For the second consecutive game, Army struck first in the first period. Senior Jude Brower sent a shot flying on net that was chipped in by the skate of plebe Billy Batten for his first collegiate goal.
After Adam Marshall won a faceoff in the Huskies' zone, Owen Nolan sauced a pass across the point to Brower who sent the puck flying on-goal for Batten's finish.
The Huskies came back with a vengeance in the second period, putting up six shots on goal in the first five minutes, but Cataldo held down the fort to maintain Army's 1-0 lead through the opening minutes.
The home team found the back of the net midway through the second period after a scramble of shots right in front of the crease gave the Huskies an open lane from the top of the left-hand circle.
Northeastern dominated the second period offensively, putting up 15 shots while holding Army to just three shots on goal.
Both teams hunkered down for the final period of regulation, with less than ten shots per team over the final 20 minutes of action.
The Black Knights found their edge midway through the action as Jack Ivey sent a wrister to the back of the net in a three-on-two rush to put Army back in the lead.
Army's defense withstood a spate of shots from the Huskies to hold their 2-1 lead through the final whistle.
The win marks the first in Army hockey head coach Zach McKelvie's career. It also stands as Army's second consecutive win over Northeastern at Matthews Arena following Army's 6-5 win on February 13, 1998.
Army edged ahead of the Huskies in the faceoff circle, claiming 26 of the game's 49 faceoffs. Barron Woodring and Nik Hong both recorded nine faceoff wins.
Sam Groebner was a defensive power for the Black Knights, logging a game-high five blocked shots.
