EASTON, Pa. – The Army West Point men's soccer team picked up a massive road win on Saturday afternoon, as it took down Lafayette 2-0 at Oaks Stadium.
Army (5-5-5, 3-3-1 Patriot) helped solidify its footing in the Patriot League standings as it fights to secure one of the six spots in the Patriot League Tournament. The Black Knights now have 10 points on the season and sit in fifth place in the standings; three points clear of seventh place. Lafayette (5-6-5, 2-2-3 Patriot) entered the day two points ahead of Army but now trail by one point.
It was a quiet opening half, with neither team generating much offense. Both teams were scoreless in the first 45 minutes, with Army recording no shots on goal while Lafayette had two. The Black Knights did have four corner kicks, but nothing came from them. Michael Guiry returned to the starting lineup on Saturday and made two saves in the opening half.
Army started to settle in during the first phase of the second half and finally broke through in the 56th minute on a goal by freshman Jack De Simone, his third of the season. The goal was assisted by fellow freshman Nicholas Berardi. The duo also connected for a goal against Holy Cross last Saturday at Malek Stadium.
The Black Knights were in control for the entire second half, as Lafayette did not record a shot on goal.
With just over 10 minutes left to play, Army added to its lead on a gorgeous goal by Justin Davidyok, the first of his season and career. Davidyok collected the ball outside of the box and fired home a missile of a shot that tucked inside the right post to make it 2-0.
Army finished the afternoon leading in shots on goal (3-2), corner kicks (6-3) and saves (2-1).
Guiry recorded the win and moves to 5-2-4 on the season. Saturday was his fifth shutout of the season. Eric Axtman was credited with the loss and is 5-6-4 on the year.
Coaches Corner – Head coach Brian Plotkin
"I am really proud of the group today. Getting three points is hard and a road three points even more so. We talked about control, focus and relentlessness and the team did a great job of it today."
