Hockey Falls 3-2 to Falcons in Overtime

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point hockey (3-7-3, 1-7-2 Atlantic Hockey America) returned to the ice at Tate Rink for game two against service academy rival Air Force (7-6-1, 4-4-0 Atlantic Hockey America) on Saturday Night.
The two teams battled it out through regulation, but the Falcons found the back of the net in overtime to take home the 3-2 overtime win.
The Black Knights put sophomore JJ Cataldo in net once more where he logged 21 saves against Air Force's 24 total shots on goal.
The Falcons sent Dominik Wasik out to face the Black Knights and he delivered 31 saves on Army's 33 shots on goal.
Air Force set a fast pace for the game early with eleven shots within the first three and a half minutes of play before Army could take a shot of their own. The Black Knights responded with a strong push of their own as they recorded six of the game's next seven shots.
Shortly after the seven-minute mark, the Falcons scored their first goal of the night, striking first for the second game in a row.
With the clock winding down in the first period, Army answered with their first goal of the night. Senior Sean Vlasich found the back of the net with his first goal of the season, set up by Nik Hong.
The senior defenseman's goal marked the second of his career – he scored his first collegiate goal as a freshman against the Falcons at Tate Rink in 2023.
Army came out of the first intermission looking to take the lead, tallying seven shots in the first five minutes. Both defenses battled throughout the period to keep their service academy rival off the board.
The Falcons eventually broke through on a power play opportunity with just under two minutes left in the second period to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
With the third period on deck, Army emerged from the locker room on the hunt for any opportunity to close the gap.
With a penalty awarded to the Falcons in the third frame, the Black Knights gained a power play opportunity with five and a half minutes elapsed off the clock in last period of regulation.
After a faceoff win from Barron Woodring, sophomore forward Ben Ivey fired the puck over Wasik's glove and into the back of the net to tie the score at two.
The Black Knights led the shots and shots on goal in the third period, but a staunch defensive effort from both sides the rest of the way kept the score at two to send the game into overtime.
Army came out with a chip on their shoulder in overtime, recording four shots including one shot on goal but the Falcons' defense held strong to keep the game alive.
Air Force secured the win with their first shot in the overtime period to complete the series sweep.
