Men's Basketball Scores Overtime Win Over Binghamton to Close Non-Conference Play

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point men's basketball (6-7) finished its non-conference slate with an overtime win inside Christl Arena against the Binghamton University Bearcats (3-11), 95-85.
With the win, the Black Knights improve their record to 10-6 in the series history between the two teams. They also snapped the three-game losing streak against Binghamton. Army has also won three straight games and five of its last six matchups.
After a back-and-forth game, the Black Knights sealed the game in overtime, outscoring the Bearcats 19-9 to help earn their sixth win in non-conference play, tying the most wins in non-conference play the Black Knights have earned under head coach Kevin Kuwik.
Jaxson Bell led the way scoring-wise for Army with a career-high 24 points, while shooting 66.7 percent from the floor and 71.4 percent from the three-point line. Bell also added six rebounds.
Not to be outdone, Ryan Curry neared a triple-double, finishing the game with 23 points, a career-high nine rebounds and seven assists. Curry hit those numbers while shooting 55.5 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from behind the arc.
Jackson Furman rounded out Army's double-digit scorers, finishing with 13 points and added four rebounds plus two assists.
How It Happened.
The Black Knights got out to a quick start in the first four minutes, taking an early 8-4 lead.
Jacen Holloway got the scoring started with a layup. Then Tate Laczkowski scored four points on back-to-back possessions, one assisted by Kevin McCarthy and the other assisted by Ryan Curry. Kevin McCarthy added a floater to cap the scoring.
Over the next four minutes, Binghamton outscored Army, but the Black Knights still held onto a 13-11 lead with 11:49 left in the first half. Joshua Eli added a layup from a cross-court pass from Ryan Curry, and Jaxson Bell hit his first three-pointer of the day.
Army added to its lead, making it an 18-14 game with 7:36 left in the first half. Jaxson Bell added a made free throw, Ryan Curry hit a circus shot for two points and Jacen Holloway used a second-chance opportunity to add another two.
Over the next three minutes, the Bearcats went on a 7-2 run to take a brief 21-20 lead with 4:02 left in the first half. Kevin McCarthy was the only scorer, scoring on a backdoor cut after getting a pass from Jacen Holloway.
In the final four minutes of the first frame, Binghamton outscored Army 11-10, allowing Binghamton to take a 32-30 lead into the locker room.
Jaxson Bell and Ryan Curry each added three-pointers, then Tate Laczkowski and Jorn Everson each added layups to close the first 20 minutes.
Army came out firing in the second half, starting on a 9-0 run that extended to an 11-4 run over the first four minutes, giving Army a 41-36 lead with 17:06 left to play.
The 9-0 run was led by Ryan Curry, who scored deep three-pointers in back-to-back possessions. Then, lightning struck twice when Curry passed another cross-court dime, this time to Tate Laczkowski, who converted the three-point play. Kevin McCarthy added a jumper on a second-chance opportunity to add to the run.
After the two teams stayed scoreless for two minutes, the two teams combined for 15 points over two minutes, with Army scoring eight points to build a 49-43 lead with 12:06 left to play. Jaxson Bell scored five points in that stretch while Furman added a three-pointer.
Over the next four minutes, both teams scored in bursts, but Army still held onto its lead. Jackson Furman hit his second three-pointer, then Jorn Everson added a three-pointer, and Joshua Eli added a jumper to build a 57-47 lead.
But the Bearcats came storming back, going a quick 8-0 run to make it a 57-55 game with 7:29 left to play.
Binghamton continued to narrow the lead, outscoring Army 9-7 to make it a 64-64 game with 4:15 left to play in the game. Jackson Furman added a three-pointer, Jorn Everson added a layup and Ryan Curry added two points.
Then Army went on a 10-2 run in under two minutes to make it a 66-74 game with 2:31 left to play.
Ryan Curry once again served as a spark plug in the run, starting the run by converting a four-point play. Jaxson Bell then hit a three-pointer with an assist from Jackson Furman. Jacen Holloway also added a three-pointer courtesy of a pass from Tate Laczkowski.
Then, the Bearcats outscored Army 10-2 in the final two minutes to make it a tied game at 76-76 with 11 seconds left to play. Jorn Everson and Jaxson Bell each had a made free throw during that stretch. The Black Knights ran one play, but came up short, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, the Black Knights got the edge over the Bearcats from the jump, with Jackson Furman getting a layup after recovering the jump ball. Then Jaxson Bell hit a three-pointer courtesy of a pass from Jackson Furman to help make it 81-79 lead for Army with 3:56 left in overtime.
Then over the next two-and-a-half minutes, the Black Knights went on a 10-2 to make it a 91-81 game with less than a minute left to play.
Ryan Curry led all scorers with four points in the stretch. Jaxson Bell hit a clutch three-pointer off an inbounds play, giving Ryan Curry his final assist of the afternoon. Jackson Furman added a layup and Joshua Eli added one point in the run.
In the final minute, the Black Knights sealed the game from the free-throw line, with Ryan Curry and Jaxson Bell each adding two more points to seal the game for Army at 95-85.
