Hockey Draws Tie with Sacred Heart, Falls 2-0 in Shootout

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Army West Point hockey (4-8-4, 1-8-3 Atlantic Hockey America) returned to the road for their first December contest as they traveled to take on Sacred Heart (7-6-2, 4-3-2 Atlantic Hockey America) where they drew a 3-3 tie with the Pioneers that saw the home team claim a 2-0 shootout win in game one of the weekend series.
The two teams duked it out through the entirety of regulation in a remarkably evenly matched contest as both teams recorded three goals and five assists, Sacred Heart led the faceoffs won 31-30, Army tallied 43 shots on goal to the Pioneers' 36, and Army blocked 12 shots to Sacred Heart's 16.
Jacob Biron made his second consecutive start in goal for the Black Knights, racking up 33 saves against Sacred Heart's 36 total shots on goal.
Sacred Heart sent Teagan Kendrick between the pipes where he put up 40 saves against Army's 43 shots on goal.
As the home team, the Pioneers got off to a hot start at the Martire Family Arena. After Army logged a trio of shots on goal to force saves from Kendrick, Sacred Heart jumped on the offensive and scored the first goal of the game five seconds shy of the four-minute mark.
The Black Knights turned up the heat, drawing a pair of power plays and edging ahead in the shots on goal total as the clock ticked down before evening the score with four seconds left on the clock.
Army advanced into the offensive zone, passing around the perimeter a handful of times before Owen Nolan passed to Easton Zueger who took a shot that was deflected to the waiting stick of Ben Ivey on the edge of the crease from where he collected the puck and chipped it to the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
The Black Knights continued to press their momentum out of the first intermission, logging four shots on goal in the first five minutes of the period to keep the pressure on Sacred Heart's defense.
Army's tenacity paid off midway through the fifth minute of action as Ben Ivey ripped a shot from the faceoff circle on an Army power play to give Army its first lead of the night.
The Pioneers picked up the pace as the second frame continued in a concerted effort to defend their home ice, but Army maintained its 2-1 lead to the second intermission.
Sacred Heart came out of the second break on a tear, tying the game at two just three minutes back into play, but the Black Knights came to play as sophomore forward Jack Ivey struck from the doorstep off a rebound from a Barron Woodring shot to take Army ahead 3-2 just 22 seconds later.
The fraught battle continued and the Pioneers struck paydirt once more shortly after the seven-minute mark to bring the game tied at three apiece.
The two teams traded momentum and shots rapidly, but stalwart defense from both teams sent the game into overtime where the back-and-forth play continued all the way through the five-minute period to send the game into a shootout.
The Pioneers scored in the first and third round of the shootout while the Black Knights were denied, awarding the extra point to the home team in game one of the weekend.
