December 06, 2025 | Hockey
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Army West Point hockey (5-8-4, 2-8-3 Atlantic Hockey America) claimed three league points in Fairfield on Saturday after securing its first shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Sacred Heart (7-7-2, 4-4-2 Atlantic Hockey America).
After a scoreless first period, the Black Knights cranked up the heat in the second period with two goals in the middle frame to claim the advantage that would keep them in the lead through the final whistle.
JJ Cataldo made his return between the pipes and secured his third career shutout with 26 saves against Sacred Heart's 26 shots on goal.
The Pioneers returned Teagan Kendrick to the ice where he put up 15 saves against Army's 17 shots on goal.
Fresh off their shootout win on Friday night, Sacred Heart dominated the first period as Army fought furiously to defend Cataldo in goal. The Pios put up 10 shots on goal to Army's three in the opening frame.
The Pios opened the second period with the same aggression, forcing a save from Cataldo just 18 seconds into the action, but Army's tenacity once again proved the difference maker.
Jack Ivey poke checked a pass between Pioneers in Army's defensive zone to interrupt a chance for the home team and immediately charged up the ice followed by Vincent Salice whose signature speed put him in open ice from where he buried Ivey's set up for the first goal of the game shortly after the nine-minute mark.
The Black Knights continued to battle, holding off power play opportunities for Sacred Heart and drawing power play opportunities of their own until Barron Woodring capitalized on a man-advantage for Army in the final minute of the period.
The Black Knights circulated the puck around the edges of their offensive zone until Jack Ivey sauced a pass to Jude Brower who fired from the point that a quick-thinking Barron Woodring redirected to push Army to a 2-0 lead with 46 seconds remaining on the clock.
Sacred Heart fought voraciously in the third period to cut into Army's lead, drawing three penalties off the Black Knights including nearly two full minutes of five-on-three play in the front half of the period.
The Black Knights held firm in front of Cataldo, however, as they thwarted 24 total shots from the Pioneers and Cataldo logged 12 saves against the 12 shots that made it on-target to defend Army's 2-0 lead through the final whistle.
Cataldo earned his third career shutout after earning his first two shutouts last season against Niagara (Nov. 8, 2024) and Robert Morris (Jan. 25, 2025).
