Baseball Splits Opening Day Doubleheader
February 14, 2025 | Baseball
MADISON, Ala. – Army West Point Baseball split Friday's season opening-doubleheader against the North Alabama Lions at Toyota Field.
The Black Knights rode a middle-innings flurry in Game 1 to win its fourth consecutive season-opener, but saw a ninth-inning rally fall short in Game 2 to move to 1-1.
Game 1
Early momentum in Game 1 went the home team's way. UNA loaded the bases with nobody out in the opening inning but were limited to just one run by starting pitcher Justin Lehman.
Lehman struck out seven batters across six frames, allowing just the first inning run. He also batted for himself in the contest before being pinch ran for by Kevin Luke in the eighth inning.
The Black Knights got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, when Thomas Schreck recorded a bases loaded infield RBI single. Later in the frame, Army went ahead 3-1 when Addison Ainsworth walked with the bases loaded, and Huntsville native Paul Andrzejewski scored from second on a wild pitch in the same sequence.
Andrzejewski logged his own RBI an inning later, bringing home Coleson Titus on a fielder's choice. Later in the sixth, Delph scored Lehman on a single to left field.
Michael Delph made it 6-1 in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to bring home Luke from third base.
Trey Ates recorded a three-inning save, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the eighth.
Game 2
Army left 13 men on base in the nightcap to settle for the twin bill split.
Down two in the ninth inning, the Black Knights sent the go-ahead run to the plate. After Titus put both baserunners in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, Lehman—playing first base in Game 2 after earning the win earlier Friday—grounded out to score Ainsworth, and put Chris Barr 90 feet away from scoring the game-tying run. However, Army ran out of outs on the next place appearance.
Andrew Berg was the Game 2 starter and struck out five over five innings, while allowing just one run.
Mark Abell tossed three innings in relief, allowing two runs and taking the decision.
Like in Game 1, the Lions drew first blood, this time in the second inning with a one-out RBI single.
The Black Knights tied the matchup in the fifth, when Ainsworth scored Andrzejewski with an RBI groundout.
UNA responded with one run each in the sixth and seventh innings to take the lead for good.
By the Numbers
8: Army drew eight walks in the opening contest, led by Addison Ainsworth with three.
2: In addition to his Game 1 pitching win, Lehman drew two walks across four total plate appearances in the daycap and was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
2: Barr walked twice in Game 2
0: Army committed no errors in Game 2.
Black Knight Notes
Army won its fourth consecutive season-opening game and moved to 6-1 since 2019 in its first game of the season.
Delph—a freshman—made his career debut Friday, at first base. In Game 2, fellow plebe JT Craig followed suit in left field. Also in the nightcap, junior catcher Jack Quinlan made his first career start.
The Black Knights won with more runs (six) than hits (five) in Game 1.
