Hockey Defeats Air Force 2-1 on the Road

USAFA, CO - Army West Point hockey (13-16-1, 13-9-1 Atlantic Hockey America) held on for a 2-1 victory at Air Force (13-19-1, 9-13-1 Atlantic Hockey America) in game of its series in Colorado.
Army improves to 8-1-1 in its past ten games in the win, as freshman goaltender JJ Cataldo has featured in each during the stretch and was stellar again tonight with 33 saves and one goal allowed.
The Black Knights were outshot 34-12 in total for the game, including just one shot on goal in the third period as Air Force looked to tie the game.
Nils Forselius logged both goals for the Black Knights, becoming the fourth plebe to notch a multi-goal effort this season for Army, marking the first Army rookie class in the Atlantic Hockey era (2002-pres.) to achieve that mark.
Army got on the board on the first shift of the game as Forselius took the puck right off a Falcon's stick in their defensive zone before making a move firing a tight-angled shot past Guy Blessing in net for Air Force. The goal came just 24 seconds into the game.
The rest of the period saw each team take a pair of penalties while amassing just seven shots on goal through twenty minutes.
Army went into the first intermission with just under a minute left on its second kill as both teams failed to convert with the man advantage.
Army broke through again eight minutes into the second, with Forselius notching his second of the contest off a centering pass from Jack Ivey. It marked the first multi-goal game in Forselius' career as Cataldo remained strong in net for Army.
After a pressure filled back half of the second, the Falcons were able to beat Cataldo for the first time off a rebound at the 18:22 mark with Sam Stitz finding the back of the net.
Army recorded just four shots on goal in the second period but took a one-goal lead into the third period.
Air Force continued the pressure to begin the third frame, as Cataldo made multiple key saves to maintain Army's lead. Army got its first shot on Blessing just over seven minutes into the frame after Cataldo had been tested eight times already.
Army continued to weather the storm, including killing off a pivotal penalty midway through the period. Cataldo made 16 saves in total in the period to maintain Army's lead into the closing minutes.
Air Force maintained possession with an empty net, but the Army defense held firm as the clock winded down. The Falcons had one final look in the closing seconds, which saw the effort blocked by Michael Sacco to ensure the victory.
