Rifle Falls to Navy in Star Match
February 03, 2025 | Rifle
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Army West Point rifle team fell to host Navy, 5878-5839 in the Academy five-man scoring format, Saturday at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range in the annual Star Match presented by USAA.
Army and Navy are members of the GARC (Great America Rifle Conference) and it was the Black Knights' final regular-season conference match bowing 4709-4668 in the NCAA format.
Addison Antwiler posted Army's highest finish claiming third-place honors in air rifle with a 595, just one point shy of her career high, and two off the highest score recorded by Navy in that discipline. Chris Jennings was eighth with a 591, while Ashton Arlington and Briggs Moore also broke into the top 11 as they posted 589s. Jennings nipped Moore by a point on center shots (43) for the 10th spot.
Nicholas Bull and Jennings were Army's top shooters in smallbore firing a 582 and 580 placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Brenna Green and Antwiler recorded identical 578s taking seventh and eighth as the Black Knights claimed four of the final top eight sports in smallbore.
Antwiler and Jennings were also among the leaders in the aggregate scoring. Antwiler combined for an 1173 for fourth place and Jennings was next with an 1171.
"I'm proud of the way the cadets fought today," said Army head coach Leighton Dempster. "The Star match brings a lot of pressure and intensity, so it was great to see emotional control across the line with 50% of our roster being plebes (freshmen). We know what we need to work on, so we will continue to push our standard and focus on cleaning up the little things heading into our next home match."
Army (4-9) returns home to host North Georgia next weekend (Feb 14) at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center followed by the NCAA Qualifier (Feb. 22) in closing out its regular season slate.
