March 15, 2025 | Men's Lacrosse
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The no. 3 ranked Army West Point men's lacrosse team (7-0, 3-0 Patriot League) extended its impressive 2025 campaign with a 13-4 win at Lehigh to improve to 7-0 to begin the season – the squad's second 7-0 start since 1958.
The Black Knights' win marks the second time the squad has earned at least 7-0 starts in back-to-back seasons since the 1953 and 1954 seasons. Army went 9-2 overall in both the 1953 and 1954 seasons.
Senior attackman Jackson Eicher put on an offensive show for the Black Knights, leading the squad with a career-high six goals against the Mountain Hawks. Gunnar Fellows and Hill Plunkett tied for second on the team in points with three points each on a pair of goals and an assist for the junior and freshman attackmen.
Junior goalkeeper Sean Byrne was a brick wall in net for Army, holding the Mountain Hawks to just four goals and logging nine saves in the contest. The showing improves Byrne to a 4.24 goals-against average to retain his place atop the national leaderboard.
Army was perfect in the clear against the Mountain Hawks, going 28-28 in Bethlehem with 11 caused turnovers for each team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Donning its all-black uniforms once more, Army's offense set the pace early in the first quarter as Jackson Eicher notched two goals back-to-back to open the scoring for the Black Knights, the first of which he buried just over a minute and a half into the game with the second goal following thirty seconds later.
Lehigh drew tied on a pir of back-to-back goals for Colin French, but Eicher put the pedal to the metal for Army and pulled the Black Knights back into the lead with his third and fourth goals of the day. Hill Plunkett jumped in on the fun with a shot that found the back of the net with just six seconds left on the clock to put Army ahead 5-2 at the first break.
Grant Masterson opened the second quarter scoring in Army's favor with his second goal of the season to extend Army's lead to four only two minutes into the return to action. The Mountain Hawks notched their third goal of the game midway through the quarter, but Hill Plunkett restored Army's four-goal lead just under 45 seconds later with an unassisted goal for the Black Knights.
Gunnar Fellows joined Eicher and Plunkett in the goals column as he notched a goal with five minutes remaining in the quarter to mark his 20th consecutive game with a goal. Lehigh's offense worked to cut into Army's lead but a stalwart showing from Sean Byrne including a save with two seconds left on the clock gave Army an 8-3 lead heading into the second half.
Lehigh's offense would find the first paydirt of the third quarter after withstanding a trio of shots from the Black Knights. With three minutes expired from the clock the Mountain Hawks snuck their fourth goal of the game past Byrne to which freshman attackman responded at the 10-minute mark with a goal of his own.
Army continued to launch a barrage of shots at the Mountain Hawks goal and Gunnar Fellows found the open lane with just under five minutes left in the quarter. Senior defenseman AJ Pilate delivered on a wraparound goal to mark his second career goal and first of the season as he gave Army an 11-4 lead that held through the start of the fourth quarter.
The Black Knights shut down the Mountain Hawks' offensive efforts in the fourth quarter, holding Lehigh to just five shots on goal in the final fifteen minutes of play. Jackson Eicher extended Army's lead over the Mountain Hawks with a pair of goals in the final quarter, marking his fifth and sixth goals of the game almost exactly five minutes apart so earn a new career high for goals in a game.
The senior attackman first struck unassisted with 9:46 left on the clock before finishing a setup from freshman Tyler Clark with 4:42 remaining in the game to give Army the 13-4 advantage that would hold through the final whistle.
