Army West Point Athletics
Baseball Defeated at UConn
April 23, 2025 | Baseball
The Black Knights head into their final Patriot League series this weekend at 19-20 overall, and 13-9 in conference action.
For the fourth time in its last five contests, and the 11th time over its last 13, Army scored first. That opening run came in the form of a Zac Farrell solo home run in the game's second at-bat, batting the highest in the order since leading off on opening weekend February 15.
Jack Quinlan recorded an RBI later in the inning to make it 2-0 Army. While UConn would answer with one run in the bottom of the inning, Thomas Schreck gave the Black Knights their two-run lead back in the fourth with an opposite field solo home run.
UConn took the lead with four runs in the fifth and added to its margin with another run in the seventh.
Army crept back into the game with a two-out RBI single from Chris Barr in the eighth to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Both tying runs on base would be stranded however, and the Black Knights would give up six in the eighth.
Quinlan gave Army a late run in the ninth with an RBI standup triple to straightaway center.
Starting pitcher Michael Delph—who also slotted into the DH spot and drew a walk in the seven hole—struck out three batters while allowing just one run across three innings. He took a no-decision.
Trey Ates pitched two frames out of the bullpen and Mark Abell contributed another pair, with three strikeouts. Bryce Brownlee also pitched in relief.
By the Numbers
3-for-4: Schreck was 3-for-4 Wednesday evening.
2-for-4: Quinlan was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
5: The Black Knights got five of their nine leadoff batters on base.
Black Knight Notes
For the first time in his career, Delph both pitched and slotted in the DH spot in the same game. He had previously pitched in three contests and hit in eight, but never in the same contest. Army used a starting pitcher in the DH spot for the fourth time this season, with all three previous instances involving Justin Lehman (February 14 at UNA, February 21 at Wofford and February 28 at Air Force).
Farrell started in center field for the first time in his career. The junior had previously made 19 starts in right and three in left in 2025.
Wednesday's 5:05 p.m. start time represented the second-latest first pitch for Army in 2025, behind only a 5:50 p.m. start at North Alabama for an opening-day doubleheader nightcap.
Army committed no errors in a game for the 13th time in 2025.
