Baseball Walks Off Marist in the Ninth
April 09, 2025 | Baseball
And what happens under the lights is what is remembered most, years later.
That was most certainly the case for Army West Point Baseball vs. the Marist Red Foxes Wednesday at Doubleday Field.
A pitching dual turned back-and-forth affair as the afternoon gave way to evening, the Black Knights walked off Marist with two outs in the ninth to win 8-7 over their Hudson Valley foe.
The play to be remembered came after Chris Barr and Addison Ainsworth walked with two outs in the ninth. Then, on an 0-1 count, William Parker appeared to send the game into extra innings with a high popup to the right side of the infield. However, the ball was lost in the lights, and Barr was able to cross the plate moments after the ball hit the turf.
The final three innings saw three lead changes, as a 1-0 contest heading into the seventh saw 13 runs scored in the final three innings.
Robbie Penswick—Army's saves leader this season—earned his first win of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth inning. He got two big outs to finish the ninth, on a JT Craig outfield assist to Jack Quinlan at the plate to nail the go-ahead runner attempting to score after a flyout to right field.
Michael Delph—making his second pitching start of the year—went 2.2 innings and struck out a pair of batters. Mark Abell followed for 2.1 shutout relief innings, before Walker Calvo allowed an unearned run in the sixth.
Trey Ates pitched the seventh and eighth innings before giving way to Penswick.
Army opened the scoring in the third on a two-out RBI single from Quinlan. Marist would tie the game in the sixth and take a 4-1 lead in the seven, all on unearned runs.
The Black Knights retook the lead in the bottom of the inning. After RBI base hits from William Parker and Justin Lehman, Paul Andrzejewski walked with the bases loaded to tie the game at 4-4, and Thomas Schreck put Army in front on an infield single. Coleson Titus crossed the plate an at-bat later to extend the home team's lead.
Finding themselves down a run again an inning later, Titus singled to score Ainsworth with two outs in the eighth to tie the game once more, but Lehman was called out at home on a play at the plate. The go-ahead run would have to wait one additional inning.
With the win, Army improves to 14-17 overall.
By the Numbers
2: Parker recorded two RBIs Wednesday.
3-for-4: Titus was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
9: Army's batters drew nine walks, with Barr, Ainsworth, Lehman and Andrzejewski each working two.
Black Knight Notes
Ethan Ellis returned to the starting lineup at right field for the first time since March 1 at Air Force.
Army sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh inning, the ninth time this year the Black Knights have sent nine or more to the plate in one frame.
Schreck extended his on-base streak to 17 games Wednesday.
Army won on a walk-off (not including run rule walk-offs) for the first time since Barr's RBI single secured a win over Navy April 28, 2024.
