October 09, 2026 | Sprint Football
WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point sprint football remained unbeaten and opened conference play with a 24-7 victory over Mansfield on Friday night at Shea Stadium. After falling behind in the opening quarter, Army (4-0, 1-0) scored 24 unanswered points and held the Mountaineers scoreless over the final 54:08 to improve to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The win was also the 104th of head coach Mark West's career, tying Eric Tipton (1957-76) for the most coaching victories in program history. West reached the milestone in his 16th season leading the Black Knights, while Tipton recorded 104 victories across 20 seasons at Army.
Mansfield (3-1, 1-1) struck first midway through the opening quarter when Joseph Frye connected with Ajani Gibson for a 28-yard touchdown pass, capping a 62-yard drive and giving the visitors a 7-0 lead. Army's defense responded by shutting out the Mountaineers the rest of the way, limiting Mansfield to 180 total yards and just 73 rushing yards on 36 attempts.
The Black Knights had an opportunity to tie the game early in the second quarter after driving to the Mansfield 1-yard line but were stopped on fourth down. Army would capitalize on its next possession, taking over at the Mansfield 28-yard line after a short punt. Five plays later, senior quarterback Kyle West found junior wide receiver Carson McFadden for an 18-yard touchdown with 6:43 remaining in the half. Junior kicker Nicholas Cueto's extra point evened the score at 7-7.
After a scoreless opening half beyond Army's tying touchdown, the Black Knights grabbed the lead for good late in the third quarter. Army marched 59 yards in 11 plays and consumed 5:22 off the clock before Cueto connected on a 14-yard field goal with 1:11 remaining in the period to put Army in front, 10-7.
Army quickly created separation in the fourth quarter. Taking over at the Mansfield 48-yard line after a nine-yard punt, the Black Knights needed just two plays to find the end zone. West connected with sophomore wide receiver Marek Arbogast for a 44-yard touchdown strike to extend the lead to 17-7 with 12:25 remaining.
Following another defensive stop highlighted by a sack from junior defensive lineman Tyrus Carter and senior linebacker Jake Oxendine, Army put the game away. Starting at the Mansfield 40-yard line, the Black Knights went 40 yards in four plays before junior running back Gabriel Bolivar scored from six yards out to make it 24-7 with 8:54 left in the game.
West finished 15-of-23 passing for 211 yards and two touchdowns. McFadden turned in a game-high eight receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown, while Arbogast added four catches for 95 yards and a score. Together, the duo accounted for 196 of Army's 211 receiving yards.
Bolivar led the Army ground attack with 51 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Senior running back JP Ross added 31 rushing yards as Army totaled 76 net rushing yards and 287 yards of total offense.
Defensively, senior linebacker George Donohue and Carter paced the Black Knights with 10 tackles apiece. Junior defensive back Jaret Bosarge added seven tackles, including a 16-yard sack and two tackles for loss, while senior defensive back Drew Waldron also recorded seven stops. Oxendine finished with four tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a half sack and three quarterback hurries as Army recorded five tackles for loss and two sacks.
Late in the fourth quarter, sophomore linebacker Reed Hisle sealed the victory with the Black Knights' lone takeaway. Hisle intercepted a pass at the Army 42-yard line and returned it 13 yards into Mansfield territory. He finished with six tackles and the interception, while sophomore defensive back Otto Leone added five tackles and a pass breakup as Army held Mansfield to 107 passing yards.
On special teams, Cueto was perfect, converting all three extra-point attempts and his 14-yard field goal. Senior punter Alex Perine averaged 42.3 yards on three punts and placed one inside the 20-yard line, while Brayden Jones averaged 30.0 yards on two kickoff returns to help Army win the field-position battle throughout the night.
