No. 10 Men’s Lacrosse Bests Bears 16-7 in Georgia

MACON, Ga. – Army West Point men's lacrosse (5-0, 0-0 Patriot League) earned its fifth consecutive win and its second win in the Peach State this season on Monday as the Black Knights defeated the Mercer Bears (3-2, 0-0 ASUN) on the road.
Gunnar Fellows and Evan Plunkett led the charge for the Black Knights as Fellows tallied a game-high four goals and an assist for a five point day while Plunkett led all players with six points from three goals and three assists.
Keagan Treacy and CJ Monturio led Army with two caused turnovers each to give Army the edge in the caused turnovers battle (12-11).
Sean Byrne logged 50 minutes in goal during which he logged 10 saves for the Black Knights. Evan Richardson tagged in with 10 minutes left on the clock and delivered a save for Army.
Tade Wynn entered the game in goal for Army with just over five minutes left on the clock where the freshman put up two saves for Army. Brady White took to the field with a minute and a half left in regulation to help Army hold their nine-goal lead through the final whistle.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Army scored first for the second time this season to set a quick pace of play in motion in the Monday morning matchup.
Senior midfielder Evan Plunkett logged his fourth goal of the season just two minutes into the game to start the day.
The Bears put two goals in the back of the net as the first quarter continued but the home team's lead did not last long as Gunnar Fellow buried a shot of his own with four minutes left on the clock to tie the game.
Aiden Weisenborn scored with a minute and a half remaining in the quarter to push Army back to a one goal lead heading into the second quarter.
Evan Plunkett added his second goal of the day just 61 seconds after the quarter break with the assist from his brother Hill to kick off a five-goal period for the Black Knights.
Sophomore attacker Brayden Fountain scored his first of the day shortly after the 11-minute mark to put Army ahead by three before defenseman Tommy Stines picked up a ground ball and carried it the length of the field to score his first career goal three minutes later.
Army scored two more in quick succession as the Plunkett brothers scored with seven minutes and five and a half minutes left on the clock as Hill put away the assist from Fountain and Evan finished a set up from Tylre Clark to give Army a six-goal lead.
Mercer got a goal back with 25 seconds left on the clock in the first half, but Army carried an 8-3 lead into halftime.
The Black Knights jumped back on the attack in the third quarter, set off when Mike Harney dove through the air to secure his third goal of the season four and a half minutes into the second half.
As the Bears fought to contain the Army offense, the Black Knights capitalized on some confusion around Mercer's goal to move into double digits with Fountain's second goal of the day.
Mercer cut Army's lead to six goals two minutes later, but the Black Knights continued to press the Bears, scoring two goals back-to-back in the final minute and a half of the third quarter from the crosse of Fountain to move up to a 12-4 lead entering the final quarter of regulation.
Army's offensive onslaught continued in the fourth quarter, led off by a man-up goal from Caleb Caldwell just 12 seconds into the quarter.
The Black Knights continued to push the pace as Caleb Caldwell claimed a faceoff win and took the ball all the way to the back of the net to score his first goal of the season ten seconds later.
Mercer tallied their fifth goal of the day at the 12-minute mark, but Tyler Mathews' first career goal five minutes into the fourth quarter extended Army's lead back to 10.
Evan Richardson stepped into the goal for Army where he faced down the Bears as Aiden Bross scored his first career goal a minute after Mathews, bringing Army to an 11-goal lead in the contest.
The Bears tallied two goals to cut the deficit to nine goals, but quick work from Tade Wynn and Brady White in goal throughout the final five minutes of regulation time maintained Army's 16-7 lead through the final whistle.
