No. 8 Men’s Lacrosse Secures First League Win With 13-5 Victory Over Holy Cross

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The No. 8-ranked Army West Point men's lacrosse team (6-0, 1-0 Patriot League) defeated the Holy Cross Crusaders (3-3, 0-1 Patriot League) in its first Patriot League matchup Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium.
Gunnar Fellows led the scoring for the Black Knights' with three goals followed by 10 of his teammates scoring one goal each to claim a 13-5 win for their sixth straight victory.
Army's defense displayed their toughness leading the caused turnover battle (5-4) with the Crusaders and scooping up more ground balls (24-20).
The Black Knights placed senior goalkeeper Sean Byrne in goal where he logged 11 saves during his time between the pipes.
Four and a half minutes into the fourth quarter, Evan Richardson took over in the goal where he tallied two saves. Tade Wynn was sent out to man the goal for the final 5:28 of the game where he earned one save.
HOW IT HAPPENED
On a sunny afternoon at Michie Stadium, Holy Cross opened the scoring early with the first goal of the game just 58 seconds into play.
Brayden Fountain got the scoring started for the Black Knights under three minutes later scoring his ninth goal of the season on the assist by Hill Plunkett
Army fought to capture the momentum of the game with the help of senior attackman Gunnar Fellows, who scored the Black Knights' second goal of the game 40 seconds later.
Building up momentum for the Black Knights, Fellows netted his second goal of the day to give Army a 3-1 lead.
Both defenses held strong through the final ten minutes of the first quarter to prevent any further scoring heading into the second quarter.
Eager to take control of this matchup, Holy Cross scored their second goal less than two minutes into the second quarter bringing them within one, but the Black Knights displayed their toughness and responded with a goal of their own from the crosse of senior midfielder Cal Lambert around three and a half minutes later.
The Crusaders responded 49 seconds later with their third goal of the day to cut the Black Knights' lead back to one.
Army responded quickly once more to regain their two-score lead with a goal by Grant Masterson, his first of the season, before Gunnar Fellows buried a shot of his own for his third of the day to put the Black Knights up 6-3.
Army controlled the pace of the remaining eight minutes of the first half, scoring with goals from Tyler Clark, Mike Harney, and Drew Miller to tally five unanswered goals that gave the Black Knights a 9-3 lead heading into the half.
Army came out of the half-time break with a quick pace, eager to build off the team's nine-goal first half. Two and a half minutes into the half, Evan Plunkett buried his first goal of the day to add to Army's lead.
Just over a minute later, Tyler Matthews joined in on the scoring with his second goal of the season to give the Black Knights an eight-goal lead.
Army maintained its offensive pressure over the next nine minutes of the third quarter, controlling possession of the ball and tallying six shots on goal to set up Ben Calabrese to break through the Crusaders' defense and log his second goal of the season.
After eight consecutive Army goals and a nine-goal lead, the Black Knights made a change in goal, sending Evan Richardson out to face the Holy Cross offense.
Richardson picked up two saves while surrendering one goal to Holy Cross halfway through the fourth quarter to bring the score to 12-4.
Just over two minutes later the Black Knights struck once again, this time off the stick of Connor Guibord for his first of the season.
After claiming an eight-goal lead, Army sent Tade Wynn out to the field with 5:28 remaining on the clock to defend the goal where he tallied one save while surrendering one goal to the Crusaders.
With time running out, Holy Cross scored their fifth goal of the afternoon to bring Army's lead back down to eight, but Army's advantage held through the remainder of Saturday's action.
