Softball Uses Seventh Inning Rally to Claim Series Win Over Lafayette
March 30, 2026 | Softball
WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point softball (14-18, 2-1) earned a rubber match victory inside the Army Softball Complex, defeating the Lafayette College Leopards (8-24, 1-5), 3-2.
The Black Knights rallied late to secure a dramatic 3–2 walk-off victory over Lafayette, overcoming a late deficit with timely hitting in the final inning, with Ashton White dealing the final blow with a walk-off sacrifice fly.
With the win, the Black Knights secured their first Patriot League series win of 2026 and have now won eight consecutive Patriot League series, dating back to the 2024 season. Army's last Patriot League series loss came against Lehigh on April 27-28, 2024.
Army finished the game with seven total hits, with sophomore Samantha Sims earning a team-high two hits. Mia Bonsignore earned the lone extra base knock with a double, with Sienna Tepley, Taylor Brown, Ashton White and Caitlyn Newburn each adding hits of their own. Brown and White had the two RBIs in the seventh for the Black Knights.
In the circle, Katelyn Flanders earned the start, finishing the game pitching for 5.2 innings while earning six strikeouts, allowing two hits, two walks and two earned runs.
Breanna Izzo entered the game as relief, pinching 1.2 innings, earning one strikeout and allowing one hit, but was able to hold off the Leopards to earn her seventh win of the season.
How It Happened
The game opened as a true pitcher's duel, with both sides locked in early.
Army's defense was sharp behind strong pitching, highlighted by strikeouts in the first and third innings from Army starter Katelyn Flanders that helped strand a Lafayette runner at second in the opening frame and erase a walk in the third.
Lafayette's offense struggled to generate momentum, as Army retired the side in order in the second, fourth, and fifth innings.
Offensively, Army had limited chances early but showed flashes. Ashton White recorded a single in the first, and Samantha Sims added a single in the third, but both innings ended with runners left on base.
The Black Knights continued to apply pressure in the fifth, when Mia Bonsignore lined a double to left center to put a runner in scoring position.
After a defensive miscue by Lafayette, Breanna Coonfare reached, and Bonsignore came around to score, giving Army a 1–0 lead despite just one hit in the inning.
Lafayette responded in the sixth, taking advantage of traffic on the bases before delivering a two-RBI double to center field to swing the score to 2–1.
Army then turned to Breanna Izzo in relief, who entered mid-inning and limited further damage to keep the deficit at one.
In the seventh, Army put everything together. Samantha Sims led off with a single, and after a fielder's choice, Sienna Tepley beat out an infield single to load the bases.
With one out, Taylor Brown delivered a clutch RBI single to right field, scoring Sims to tie the game at 2–2.
Moments later, Army completed the comeback. Ashton White lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Breanna Coonfare to tag and score from third, sealing the 3–2 walk-off victory.
On Deck
Next up, the Black Knights hit the road for another midweek doubleheader on Wednesday, heading to the Garden State to take on the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights.
