No. 18/19 Men’s Lacrosse Secures 14-8 League Win at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The No. 18/19 ranked Army West Point men's lacrosse team (8-3, 3-2 Patriot League) earned its third league win of the season on Saturday with a 14-8 win over the Bucknell Bison (7-3, 3-3 Patriot League) at Michie Stadium.
Fresh off their Firstie Day win against Lehigh, the Black Knights seized the momentum early in Lewisburg and kept the pedal down for the rest of the game.
Army earned a 4-1 lead in the first quarter behind a hat trick from Gunnar Fellows that swelled to a six-goal advantage in the final quarter.
Gunnar Fellows led the Black Knights four goals and three assists while Evan Plunkett recorded three goals and a team-high four assists to mark the fourth time this season two Black Knights have earned a hat trick in the same game.
The Black Knights led the shots on goal battle 20-14 as well as leading the game in ground balls with 38 to Bucknell's 30. Robert Simone led all Army players with seven ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Black Knights hit the ground running in Pennsylvania for their 11th game of the season as Gunnar Fellows secured his 22nd goal of the season just under four minutes into the action.
Fellows' success sparked a run for the Black Knights as the firstie found the back of the net two minutes later on a feed from Evan Plunkett before securing his first quarter hat trick with a goal shortly after the seven-minute mark ticked by on an assist from Brayden Fountain to give Army a 3-0 lead.
Army continued to press its advantage as Aiden Weisenborn struck unassisted with just over five minutes left on the clock to extend the lead to four.
Bucknell snuck a goal into the back of the net with 2:23 left on the clock, but a strong effort from Army's defense held the Black Knights' advantage at three goals going into the first quarter break.
Army jumped right back on the attack in the second quarter with a faceoff win from Robert Simone to set the tone for the second quarter.
Brayden Fountain scored his 22nd goal of the season at 12:21 on the clock as Fellows returned the favor with the assist to restore Army's four goal lead.
The Bison responded with a goal of their own two minutes later before the two teams engaged in a defensive standoff that lasted throughout the middling minutes of the frame until Hill Plunkett scored a goal unassisted with 3:36 remaining in the quarter.
Evan Plunkett brought the momentum firmly back in Army's control with a quick goal from the doorstep on a pass from Gunnar Fellows with just eight seconds left before halftime that sent Army into the locker room on a high note.
Bucknell's squad pushed back in the third quarter, applying pressure to Army's offense until the Black Knights broke through six and a half minutes into the quarter as Hill Plunkett scored his second unassisted goal of the game to put Army ahead 8-2.
The Bison scored two goals in the next three minutes to cut Army's advantage to four before Fountain and Weisenborn connected with 2:37 left in the third quarter to put Army ahead by five.
Bucknell maintained their pressure, however, and scored just 73 seconds later and firing off an additional three shots as the clock ticked down on the third frame.
Army turned up the heat in the final quarter of regulation time as firstie Cal Lambert scored a man-up goal just 40 seconds into the quarter after Bucknell received an illegal body check penalty.
Fellows found the back of the net for the fourth time in the game three minutes later to secure his 25th goal of the season and a six-goal lead for the Black Knights.
The Bison fought to close the gap in front of their home crowd, scoring three consecutive goals over the next six minutes to close the gap to three goals.
Army's squad got down to business as Lambert logged his second goal of the game with 4:08 left on the clock to spark a surge of three goals in 64 seconds from the Black Knights.
Evan Plunkett scored his second goal of the game 26 seconds after Lambert and completed his hat trick with a goal 38 seconds later to restore Army's six goal lead with 3:04 left on the clock.
The two teams traded shots in the final seconds of regulation, but a save from Sean Byrne with 12 seconds left on the clock preserved Army's lead through the final whistle.
