WEST POINT, N.Y. - Junior Trent Brown and freshman Kyle Golonski both netted second half goals to help Army overcome a 1-0 deficit and top Adelphi, 2-1, in a non-league men's soccer match Wednesday evening at Clinton Field.
Army freshman goalkeeper Winston Boldt stopped a pair of shots in the final two minutes, including an incredible save on an Omar Edwards attempt with two seconds to play, to preserve the Black Knights' second consecutive victory.
"It wasn't our best performance of the year," said second-year Army head coach Russell Payne. "We didn't execute particularly well, especially in the first half, and that's why we were down a goal. We were a little bit sloppy and a little bit off the mark. In the second half, Mike put in a good ball for Trent to finish and then a great individual effort from Kyle.
"I'm extremely proud of the way our team continues to fight back from early deficits," added Army's second-year head coach. "That has become our identity. I don't like falling behind a goal, but we don't give up and we never quit. We've come back from deficits all season, and we're going to keep coming at you until we find our way back into the game. Now, we have to make sure we start games that way as well."
Adelphi (6-7-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when Domenico Parrelli converted a penalty kick. Parrelli's opportunity came as a result of Brandon Stoneham being hauled down in the penalty area. Stoneham got in behind the Army defense and was poised to score when Black Knight senior Jeff Pickett fouled him in the box. Parrelli then capitalized on the penalty kick, blasting the ball past a diving Boldt.
Army junior Michael Kim generated both of the Black Knights' shots on goal in the opening frame. His first effort came on a free kick from 20 yards out, while his second attempt was a result of a well-placed cross from freshman Sean-Michael Alvarez. Adelphi goalkeeper Kyle Blackmer was able to corral both shots, however, to keep Army off the scoreboard.
Army enjoyed a 6-4 edge in shots in the opening stanza, while Adelphi held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Black Knights' continued pressure paid off midway through the second half when Brown scored his third goal of the season off a header in the 70th minute. Kim, who was credited with an assist on the marker, started the play when he lofted a direct kick into the penalty area from 40 yards out. The ball came down near a scrum of players and Brown, who stands well over six feet tall, was able to redirect it past Blackmer for the equalizer.
"We kept getting these free kicks, and eventually one had to work out for us," said Brown. "It was a great ball by Mike Kim, and I was able to get my head on it. It felt good to finally break through and score. It was frustrating because we felt like we should have scored earlier, but that goal kind of brought us back into it and we started to gain more confidence."
Golonski put Army in front in the 82nd minute when he took a feed from freshman Elliott McGilbra, made a couple of nifty moves and ripped a shot with his left foot from the top of the box and into the upper 90 on the left side of the cage. The goal, Golonski's second of the year, provided the Black Knights with their first lead of the night with just 8:43 to play in the second half.
"We built up to the goal really well," said Golonski. "Elliott played me a nice ball and I just dribbled around and hit the shot. I saw it going into the upper 90 and I was stoked. This was a big win for us, confidence-wise."
Boldt, who was not tested much during the course of the match, came up huge when it mattered the most. With a little over two minutes to play, Boldt got in front of a hard shot off the foot of Stoneham. Then, with the seconds ticking down, Edwards slipped in behind the defense and appeared to be poised to knot the score. Boldt was able to slide to his right, however, and smothered Edwards' attempt, which came from less than 10 yards.
"It kind of seemed like we were a man down, almost, just because they were trying to throw everyone forward at the end of the game," said Boldt. "The ball came over the top, and I just made myself as big as possible to try to stop it. It's great for the guys. They really picked me up after I messed up in the first half. We came back out and were able to put two in the back of the net."
Army outshot Adelphi, 13-9, in the contest, but the Panthers finished with a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. The physical game featured a 27 fouls and four yellow cards between the two sides.
Boldt (2-1-0) finished with two saves to post his second straight win. Blackner (0-3-1) made three saves in the losing effort.
Army returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 30, when the Black Knights host Patriot League rival Lafayette in its home finale at Clinton Field. Kickoff for the key conference contest is set for 3:30 p.m. The game will serve as the nightcap of a doubleheader with the Army women's soccer team, which hosts Lafayette at 1 p.m.
