LAKELAND, Fla. - Kyle Hendricks struck out 15 batters in seven innings of work, and Dartmouth put together a pair of five-run innings to spur the Big Green to an 11-2 victory over Army on Friday at sun-drenched Henley Field.
After being held to just two hits over the first two innings, Army (3-11) put a rally together in the third to score the game's first run. David Darnell led off the frame with a double down the left field line. After moving to third base on Zach Price's sacrifice bunt, Darnell scored when Ben Koenigsfeld ripped an RBI double down the right field line.
Dartmouth (3-2) responded in the bottom of the third inning by sending 10 men to the plate and scoring five runs on six hits. Jeff Keller began the uprising as he led off the frame by hitting a home run over the fence in right-center field. Brandon Parks followed with a single, but he was replaced at first base by David Turnbull, who hit into a fielder's choice. A base hit by Joe Sclafani put runners on first and second, and Sam Bean gave Dartmouth the lead with an RBI single. After Chris O'Dowd flied out, Jason Brooks was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Jeff Onstott then delivered a two-run single, and Jake Carlson added a run-scoring base hit to push Dartmouth's advantage to 5-1.
The early run support was more than enough for Hendricks (1-1), who was outstanding throughout his outing. The righty struck out the side twice and retired 11 straight batters at one point.
Dartmouth added an unearned run in the sixth inning to extend its lead to 6-1.
Army trimmed its deficit to 6-2 in the top of the eighth inning when Price singled through the right side, moved to second base on Koenigsfeld's groundout to third and scored when Joey Henshaw crushed a double into the gap in right-center field.
The Big Green scored five times off Army reliever Colin Briant in the bottom of the eighth to cap the scoring. Keller delivered the big blow in the frame as he belted a two-run double.
Black Knight starter Logan Lee (1-4) struck out a career-high eight batters in seven innings, but was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits. He retired the first six men he faced before running into trouble in the third inning.
Sean McIlroy paced Army's seven hit attack as he went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
Army returns to action later today (March 18) when the Black Knights face Indiana at Henley Field at 3 p.m.
