WEST POINT, N.Y. - Chad Marshall went 2-for-4 with four RBI, and Tyler Johnson limited Army to four hits in six strong innings to lead Stony Brook to an 11-0 victory over the Black Knights on a blustery Monday afternoon at Doubleday Field.
Johnson (3-2) struck out four and only issued one walk during his outing as the Seawolves (13-5) swept the abbreviated two-game series from the Black Knights (6-13).
Army threatened to take the lead in the fourth inning as the first three Black Knights reached to load the bases with no outs. A slow roller in front of the mound allowed the first out to be recorded at home plate, and a double-play groundball got Johnson out of the inning unscathed.
Army starter Chris Rowley (1-2) matched Johnson through the first four innings, before running into trouble in the fifth.
Stony Brook struck for three runs during that frame to take a 3-0 advantage. Travis Jankowski walked to lead off the inning, and he moved to second base when Josh Mason singled through the left side of the infield. Both runners then moved up a base on a wild pitch, and Kevin Courtney's infield single drove home Jankowski with the first run of the game. After Pat Cantwell laid down a sacrifice bunt to put two men in scoring position, Marshall came through with a two-run single down the left field line to send Mason and Courtney to the plate.
Army put together another quality scoring chance in the bottom of the sixth as consecutive singles by David Darnell and Zach Price put runners on the corners with nobody out. A fly ball to right field and another double play grounder got Johnson out of the jam and kept Stony Brook in front, 3-0.
That proved to be Army's last serious threat as Frankie Vanderka came on in relief of Johnson to start the seventh inning and tossed three perfect frames with four strikeouts.
The Seawolves broke the game open in the seventh inning, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring five two-out runs to establish an 8-0 advantage. Courtney began the rally when he singled with one out. Then, with two men down, Marshall walked and William Carmona doubled home Courtney with the first run of the frame. Maxx Tissenbaum followed with a two-run double to right field, scoring Marshall and Carmona. Stony Brook added two more unearned runs later in the inning after Army committed a pair of miscues in the field.
Stony Brook tacked on two runs in the eighth inning and added one more in the ninth to round out the scoring.
Shaun Wixted and Cody Murtle added base hits for Army, which had four hits in the contest.
Courtney chipped in three singles for Stony Brook, which banged out 14 hits in the game. Tissenbaum and Tanner Nivins also registered multiple hits for the Seawolves, who have won 11 of their last 12 games.
Army will play for the third day in a row tomorrow (Tuesday, March 29) when the Black Knights welcome Siena to West Point for a nine-inning contest. First pitch for Army's final Patriot League tune-up is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
